UK police commissioners 'were not perfect, I'm not perfect'- Acting CoP Vanterpool

The Acting CoP was speaking during The Big Story on April 22, 2025, when she disclosed that she has worked under six United Kingdom (UK) Commissioners and two local Commissioners.
“They were not perfect, like myself, I’m not perfect. They made mistakes, they made errors, they made decisions sometimes that were not pleasing to us as members of the organisation, but at the end of the day, you know what they got? They got the respect.”
Acting CoP Vanterpool added that she sometimes asks herself why that same type of respect is not shown to her as a woman.
“So you really do think you’re not getting the respect from members of the organisation and community?” Big Story host Cathy O. Richards asked.
She replied that she knows, Territory-wise, she has “110% and beyond” support as well as some support from her team.
“I thank God, I don’t allow that to deter me. I know what my goal is, because we want to make this force one of the better forces within the organisation that others can come and learn from us.”
Most challenging stint as Acting CoP
Acting CoP Vanterpool, who has acted in this position about eight times since 2021, said this current stint is the most challenging one she has had.
“October 24th last year, I sat in the seat as Acting Commissioner. I sat there with no Command Team, I had no Command Team, I had the ACP, and I had the Superintendents. I had no deputy, so as a leader in the chair now, you know I’m in charge of the entire organisation, I had to make decisions for every aspect of it.”
She added that despite the challenges, she remained “prayed up” and continued to seek God’s direction.
“He had to lead me because you're trying your best to make the right decision, but at the same time, you're hearing bashing if you make the wrong decision.”
Acting CoP Vanteerpool said there was an upsurge of crime with armed robberies, thefts, burglaries, and stolen property.
“All those crimes were up and it would be remiss of me not to say thank you to the ones, they know who they are. There were officers below my rank whom I had to rely on on a daily basis.”
She said the resignation of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Pam Trevillion also added to the burden of having no Command Team.
Much happened in the absence of a Command Team
The Acting CoP said that without a proper and official command team, much has happened since she took up the position.
“I am elated to say that where we were three, four months ago, I firmly believe that we’re in a much better position because much has been accomplished both internally and externally.”
She listed successes such as the dismantling of the Money Boys Group where the key players were apprehended, and the raising of the crime detection rate to the mandated 50%.
“All that had to do with the aggressive policing of our officers on the ground, those on the frontline making decisions in the crime unit, those making decisions when I put forward a task.”
Acting CoP Vanterpool said that for the first quarter of 2025, even more success can be seen.
“We were able to seize nine firearms…and four of them are prohibited firearms, we got 378 rounds of ammunition…on our press release now you’re seeing the items seized, items recovered, you’re seeing the names of persons arrested, that's the first time in the life of the organisation.”
While she has had major success as Acting CoP, Vanterpool has not reapplied for the post of Commissioner of Police since it was published last week.
