BALSAM GHUT, Tortola, VI- The Government of the United Kingdom (UK) has delivered on a promise to boost the British Virgin Islands’ prison system, located in Balsam Ghut, Tortola with a comprehensive support package aimed at enhancing security, operational efficiency, and staff protection at His Majesty’s Prison (HMP).

The initiative according to a formal government missive issued, underscores the UK's commitment to strengthening public safety and fostering a rehabilitative approach within the Virgin Islands Prison Service (HMVIPS).

Mr Lee Pilkington, Head of the National Locking Section at the UK Ministry of Justice (MoJ) Property Directorate, visited the HMP Balsam Ghut during the week of December 2, 2024, where he provided specialised tools and expertise to bolster security measures.

The deployment of the equipment, he said, marks a milestone in cooperation between the UK and the Virgin Islands, as cutting-edge technology and best practices from the UK prison estate were introduced domestically in the Territory.

Tangible results already being seen

According to the press release, the support package includes state-of-the-art radios and enhanced ID card systems, both funded by the UK Government.

The upgrades are reported to have already yielded tangible results with improved communication through the radios has been instrumental in intercepting contraband such as drugs, weapons, and alcohol.

Citing as example, it was pointed out that in at least one notable instance, officers swiftly intercepted a package thrown over the prison fence, demonstrating the radios' efficiency in real-time coordination between prison and police teams.

Important initiative- Governor Pruce

Governor of the Virgin Islands, His Excellency Daniel Pruce, has since also weighed in on the importance of the initiative iterating, "Security provides a strong foundation for growth and prosperity. The safety and security of Virgin Islanders is my top priority, and His Majesty’s Virgin Islands Prison Service is a key facet in that. By enhancing security at HMP Balsam Ghut and equipping prison officers, we enable the prison service to transform lives, reduce reoffending, and improve community safety."

Superintendent of HMP Balsam Ghut, Mr. Jay Kendall, also echoed this sentiment saying, "Fostering a culture of excellence at HMP Balsam Ghut is essential to safeguarding the Virgin Islands. I extend my gratitude to our UK Ministry of Justice partners for their invaluable investment in our prison service and its future."

In addition to the technological upgrades, HMVIPS also used the occasion to celebrate its staff at the inaugural HMVIPS Staff Awards, held on December 4, 2024, at Government House.

The activity also sought to highlight exceptional contributions of prison employees and key stakeholders in fostering excellence and inclusivity, with the evening's pinnacle being the recognition of Prison Officer Rodriguez as Prison Officer of the Year 2024—a testament to the dedication and professionalism of the staff.

Why they only studying prison ? Study the roads , study the BVITB , study all the money that’s wasted , study the heavy Customs duties , study the civil servants not doing their jobs , UK to less. They letting this Territory go to the dogs before they do something, study the NHI contracts, study SS at 65 , people are suffering in this place , real suffering and nobody sees it.
That’s why there’s so much revolt in the world today. Ukraine Georgia , Syria , South Korea , France , USA, people want food on the table instead of the Democratic nonsense they talking about. This Political mess we in is an embarrassment and o the territory.
From July to November we hardly had any cruise ships , July to September no school, they never did anything to the roads. Now they digging up the roads when School reopens and all these cruse ships coming , what sense does that make. Dees man dem blind. No Vision. Now the Governor studying prison prison and not the people who are not in prison. He too is a waste

Stop blaming the UK for problems created by the BVI government. The only thing the UK should be criticised for is not taking full control following the COI.
