T&T university students to get care packages as borders stay closed
PORT OF SPAIN, T&T- Relief is on the way to T&T nationals at universities across the Caribbean region as borders continue to be locked down.
National Security Minister Stuart Young confirmed that Government is working to send care packages to these students.
He was speaking at Wednesday’s daily virtual media briefing hosted by the Ministry of Health. He revealed that the Prime Minister has instructed the Minister of Finance to work along with the Minister of Education to get care packages to these students.
The packages will be sent to the UWI Mona or Cave Hill campuses, embassies, high commissions, consulates, and missions abroad to be able to provide some level or relief to these university students.
He said discussions bean a few days ago, but Government is working to get these packages out by Monday.
The Minister appealed to students at universities in the region to shelter in place.
Regarding requests for exemptions to allow them to come home while the borders remain locked down, Young said all requests will be reviewed in accordance with relevant processes and procedures, but no “amount of lawyering up” will change Government’s position.
He urged the families of these students to continue providing support as best as they can, but assured that Government will be taking every action to ensure relief gets to these students.
