ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Assessing the aftermath of Tropical Storm Philippe on the Virgin Islands (VI), Fourth District representative Hon Luce D. Hodge-Smith said the tropical storm has left a lot of damage to properties in the VI, specifically the Road Town area.

“We do have a lot of damage to properties...but [we are] very grateful to the folks who have the equipment that came out so fast and so quickly to help us to clean up. They came out privately with their private equipment… and just cleaned up the place, which is, you know, not a surprise to me because as a child, when there was a hurricane….folks just came out with their equipment automatically without anyone having to ask them,” Hon Smith said.

The legislator was speaking to Director of Communications Mrs Karia J. Christopher in a video report posted on the Facebook page of the Government of the Virgin Islands on October 4, 2023.

Hon Hodge-Smith added that she remains thankful to folks for coming out so quickly and helping to clear the roads and debris, along with reaching out to their neighbours and helping out.

Damages assessed

"So I've received a lot of calls. I've received some Videos. I went to those persons who were severely damaged, and we tried to help as much as we can. We reached out to the Red Cross. Red Cross is going to offer their assistance. So we're just going around to different areas assessing the damage,” Hon Hodge-Smith detailed.

She said as a first-time government member and legislator, she was pleased to see the community spirit as it related to helping the businesses affected by flooding.

Meanwhile, Public Works Department (PWD) personnel and private businesses could be seen continuing with the clean-up of Road Town today.

      @After the Fact

      Hn. Hodge-Smith was in her district all day yesterday. She met with most of us thru out the day and listen to our concerns. She also got the Red Cross and the PWD to assist those that needed help.

      This is not true. Luce has been on the ground as soon as it was clear to drive on the roads. Give the woman credit for coming out and ensuring district 4 gets clean up. Some of you just can never appreciate women in leadership roles.

    Flooding in Tortola

    The cause of these major flooding is due to poor planning in the past. No proper engineering, just fast development without any vision of what will happen in the future.

    We fill up the Sea, fill up the Ponds, sopped up the Wells and the water have nowhere to go.

    We paved the guts and filled them with garbage and derelict furniture, appliances and equipment and other debris. What do you expect?

    We build buildings, apartments and homes all over the place - We cut roads here and there without studding the structure of the land.

    When I was growing up in the 60's and 70's we had a lot of rain but we never had all this flooding.

    All of these recent flooding we are presently experiencing is a man made disaster and human errors.

    They just finished that development in joes hill all the trees snd brush that use to be there to slow the water down is gone and the concrete that they put down is channeling the water straight down to the one ghut by the security company the water that use to come down joes hill is also coming over the side now and coming down into the same ghut because they never made any provisions for that and that is why the vehicles could not go up joes hill because the water that use to come down joes hill e we oils have wash off all the grime and oil off the road and you would have had traction going up the hill but the water is now diverted through that development and going through the gut at speeds unheard of on the concrete but if you think that you’ve seen anything as yet wait until we really get some rain and it comes down by that hill by the purple palace that they destroyed to put that building it’s going to be something in this place what will stop the water and don’t be surprised if one day we wake up and realize the roundabout in town becomes a sink hole because the water from joeshill is moving so fast it’s going to stop that ghut by the cinema and all that water is going to settle by the roundabout and we know the problems that they faced there when they were installing the sewage pipes and manholes there not too long ago why are you all bothering Louce this is way above Louce that lady is trying stop trying to bring down people and let’s put that energy towards something productive .

    Seems like some wanted Mrs.Hodge-Smith to come out during the dam rain and flooding. At any rate, Road Town flooded before the Harbour was filled in and it will continue to flood when there's heavy rains. I say no more.
