TS Bret forms in the Atlantic; Lesser Antilles warned to monitor storm
Information coming out from the Virgins Islands (VI) Department of Disaster Management (DDM) and the National Hurricane Centre (NHC) is that at 5:00 PM AST (2100 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Bret was located near latitude 11.3 North, longitude 42.2 West.
"Bret is moving toward the west near 21 mph (33 km/h), and this motion is expected to continue for the next several days," DDM said in a press release.
Early reports also indicate that the storm may threaten the Lesser Antilles as a Category 1 hurricane towards the end of the week, and possibly move into the Caribbean after that, though computer models show a weakening trend is likely to occur.
Bret forecast to strengthen as hurricane
"Bret is forecast to strengthen and move across the Lesser Antilles as a hurricane... bringing a risk of flooding from heavy rainfall, hurricane-force winds, and dangerous storm surge and waves," the National Hurricane Center forecasters wrote in an online forecast discussion.
As such, persons in the Lesser Antilles, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands have been urged to closely monitor the storm.
Meanwhile, the DDM in a forecast said maximum sustained winds have increased to near 40 mph (65 km/h) with higher gusts. Strengthening is forecasted, which means Bret could become a hurricane in a couple of days.
DDM said while there are no watches or warnings for the VI, persons are being urged to continue monitoring the Atlantic in case of any change with Tropical Storm Brent.
CNN warned that the storm could also impact the Windward Islands later this week. The Leeward Islands, located where the northeastern Caribbean Sea meets the western Atlantic, include the Virgin Islands, Saint Martin, and Antigua and Barbuda. To the south are the Windward Islands: Dominica, Grenada, Martinique and others.
