Trio in Christmas Day cannabis bust fined!
Alla Kayde, 18, pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of cannabis, driving without a license and driving without insurance. He was unrepresented.
After apologizing to his parents and the court, Senior Magistrate Valerie Stephens fined Kayde $400 for driving without a license or 30 days in prison; no insurance $300 or 30 days and $300 for the cannabis or 30 days.
Meanwhile, his two friends 19 year-old Jashawn Estridge and Edmund Durant, 18, who were charged with unlawful possession of cannabis were fined $300 each or 30 days in prison. Both were warned by the Magistrate not to re-appear before the court. They too were unrepresented.
According to the Crown, Police stopped the vehicle driven by Kayde on Main Street in the vicinity of the Commercial Court, where he admitted to them that he did not have a driver’s license, the vehicle belonged to his mother and he just took a chance to drop a friend at the hospital.
The court heard Kayde began to act in a suspicious manner which prompted the officer to carry out searches on the three young men and the vehicle. While nothing was found on them, four clear plastic bags were found on the vehicle’s floor – three on the passenger’s side and one on the driver’s side.
When confronted with the bags, the trio had denied any knowledge of the cannabis.
In light of this, the defendants were taken to the Road Town Police Station where they spent 10 hours before they were granted police bail.
The street value for the cannabis is $37. Magistrate Stephens ordered that the illegal substance be destroyed.
