PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, Wednesday May 14, 2014, CMC – A 17-month-old baby died in the back seat of a car after his “excited” grandfather forgot to drop him off at the home of a relative before going to work on Tuesday, police have confirmed.

They said that the 56-year-old grandfather, an electrical foreman at a state agency, was anxious to report for duty after he had been informed of a promotion.

The man, who has not been identified, left his grandchild, Jadon Cudjoe, locked in the back seat of the car for more than eight hours while he was at work. He was due to have dropped off the child at the home of a relative, the regular baby-sitter.

Police said it is likely that the child died from hyperthermia due to the extreme heat, since Tuesday’s temperature reached 34 degrees Celsius. An autopsy is expected to be performed later on Wednesday.

The man said he had no knowledge the baby was in the car until he returned to the vehicle after work to find Jadon unresponsive. Baby Jadon could not be revived, despite attempts by paramedics.

Media reports Wednesday said that several police officers also broke down and cried on seeing the tortured look on the child’s face.

I heard this on the radio last week on my way home from work & I was shocked to say the least. You all time see these incidents happening in the states & never think it could happen here in the caribbean. You think hey not here. You ask yourself well how in the devil does someone forget a child in a vehicle it just doesn't happen. When I heard it I said well at no point in time during the course of the day did he not realize he left his grandson in the ride. I don't know what was going through the man's mind but I know where he is now he's grieving. A mother has lost her child, a grandfather his grandchild, a family a loved one, blame to be cast. Condolences to that family at this time.

It happens. People forget. That's why I carry my grandchild in the front passenger seat at all times. This has happened before in other parts of the world. This is not a first.

Please with the forget excuse crap! So you mean to tell me a child is place in the back of my jeep and I don't know him there? I am driving from point A to point B and forget a child in the back seat of my vehicle. Ok then continue to believe that lie. Irresponsible adult!

Carrying your grandchild in the front passenger seat is NOT a good idea. The airbag in that seat will suffocate him/her in a heartbeat if there is a collision or he will be propelled through the windshield if you need to brake suddenly. The back seat is the safest place for a baby or child strapped into a proper car seat based on age. I am very sorry for that grandfather. It could happen to the best of us.

Of course a child can be forgotten i this is some thing you are doing for the first time as we are all humans. Maybe the child fell asleep, who knows. I think puttin the mirror on the child might help. Condolences.

So if the child was supposed to go to the care taker why didn't the care taker call the mother and find out why the child aint reach yet?? and why didn't the mother call the grandfather to find out about the baby alllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll day?? something aint making sense in this story...its a sad story either way...may his soul rest in peace and may the grandfather find comfort to ease this pain he now have to live with....

I recommend that you leave the child's bag in the front seat or any item that the child was carring when entering the vehicle. Therefore upon leaving the car you will see the bag/item and would immediately remember a child is to the back.
