ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI— The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) has launched a Residential Customer Survey, as part of its Industry Review of the Virgin Islands' telecommunications sector.

The review, the TRC’s public missive said, aims to assess the industry's progress since its liberalisation in 2006 and to shape a new telecommunications policy that will promote systematic development in the Territory.

The survey, according to TRC, is designed to gather feedback from residential customers to ensure their perspectives are considered in the review process.

As such, TRC has themed the survey "Transforming Telecoms for BVI Residential Customers: Your Voice, Our Future,” with its primary objective of collecting data on purchasing patterns, switching decisions, service preferences, pricing concerns, and key factors influencing consumer choices.

The survey, TRC noted, is expected to take approximately seven minutes to complete, and responses will remain strictly confidential with the results providing valuable insights that will guide the future of telecommunications services in the Virgin Islands.

Meaningful change

Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer of the TRC, Mr Guy L. Malone, in making the announcement, noted the critical nature of public participation in shaping the industry’s future, affirming the survey is more than just a feedback mechanism; it is a platform for residents to contribute directly to meaningful changes in the sector.

He noted that customer responses would help identify emerging trends and allow the Commission to adapt to evolving consumer needs.

The survey, according to TRC, will be available from February 7, 2025, to March 7, 2025, with residential customers being able to also access it, via the TRC’s website at www.trc.vg or through links posted on the Commission’s social media platforms, including Facebook and X.

Additionally, to encourage participation, TRC said too, respondents will be entered into a draw for a chance to win prizes.

You don't need a survey because you know full well the sysyem is cheating the people of this territory for a long time and you all did nothing and continue to do nothing about it. You all don't care about what is happening.

When yall or bvi gov made a choice to keep all 3 current tele coms on contract for another 10yrs cuz them doing "good work and their prices are good." i know yall was a set of jokers just talking for talking sake

why is the bvi internet so expensive compared to other regions?

i wont deny with fiber we have improved on speeds good enough for domestic use occasionally

but they need to do better with them pricing and speed packages offered. Then there's there wifi routers which they configured or bought to only have limited range of wifi so they can charge you more if you want to expand the range... they alrdy making 300% profit on us and still want to kill out the consumer

we need Bring a star link or states tele companies with better service and competitive pricing

it have outside telecom companies charging low as 25 a month for our speeds then there's one going for 500mbs for $65 that crazy good compared to what we getting

By "other regions" are you referring to countries with much larger populations than the BVI? Because that would affect the price; The equipment or bandwidth not any cheaper because you have a smaller country/ population. So basically you have to buy equipment that cost the same money with a smaller pool of customers to make back the money from. That's why your bill is higher. Also, in many other civilized places the government offers grants and subsidies to telecom providers to either improve service, coverage or control the price of services. Here they only take they don't give anything.

Simple really, talk with the US network providers that serve St Thomas and get them over here along with Starlink. It’s not rocket science unless of course the powers that be have fingers in pies with the sham of service providers we currently have!

You will never see 500mbps for $69 in BVI. Same way a gallon of milk cost 4.99 other places and here it cost 9.99. Everything cost more here for multiple reasons why would internet be any different?

SATELLITE INTERNET and NUMBER PORTABILITY NOW!
Let Starlink in! To push broadband internet, and allow the people to have an alternative when the next storm hit us.

NUBMER PORTABILITY: let people change mobile company and keep their phone numbers to promote companies to compete with each other

COMPETITIVE PRICE: create an incentives and penalty programme for the telecommunication programmes to match the price and quality of our neighbour islands (USVI and St Martin)

Unfortunately because we have a small population when compared to other countries we will always suffer regarding prices. Don’t think of asking a US company to come in or you will cry even more. Don’t think that the service in the USVI is better. IT IS NOT. Ask customers of Liberty and you’ll find out. The grass always looks greener on the other side.

I just took the survey and I can honestly say that it seemed pointless. If the TRC really wants to make a difference, they can. They know what the issues are but we all know how things work here. This is a joke. What we NEED are lower prices, better quality internet and cell service, much better customer support and some consumer protection. If we pay high prices, then we better get equally high service. If we don’t get service then companies should discount our bills.
