TRC celebrates World Telecoms Day with Open House
The event is called World Telecommunications Information Society Day Grand Open House and it is taking place at Maria’s By The Sea in Road Town over the course of July 30, 2014 and July 31, 2014.
Speaking to members of the media during a press conference, Chief Administrative Officer of the TRC Karia J. Christopher said, “We could not think of a better way of celebrating over 50 years than to merge with the festivities [for the 60th Festival] so with that said we are so happy to have you here.”
She then invited Minister for Communications and Works Hon Mark H. Vanterpool to declare the event open.
In making brief remarks before doing so, Minister Vanterpool said that while the open house is a fun way to celebrate this day it is also an education tool that takes visitors through a chronology from 1961 to present.
“We could not have thought of a better way of celebrating over 50 years of telecommunications in the BVI than now because now the Territory is celebrating 50 years of emancipation celebrations,” he said.
“This is an extension of that celebration. I implore the public to come out over the next two days and enjoy the celebrations,” he said.
CEO of the TRC Guy L. Malone said that, “It gives me joy to sit back and watch all of the operators along with the Depart of IT in the Ministry of Communications and Works and the Telephones Unit come together to display where we were 50 years ago to where we are now.”
At the event there were displays not only by the TRC and the Ministry of Communications and Works but also the various telecommunications companies, displaying their products and services.
