FAT HOGS BAY, Tortola, VI- Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has reminded that he will soon be leading a trade mission to the Dominican Republic to secure a trade deal.

The Premier, speaking on ‘Da Morning Braff’ on Tola Radio (100.5 FM) on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, explained the government’s new approach to implementing the increased minimum wage which will now be $8.50 per hour.

With this increase of $2.50 taking effect sometime this year, Dr Wheatley said companies are bound to pass this on to their customers, driving up the cost of living.

DR trade mission may help lower prices of goods- Premier

The Dominican Republic, Premier Wheatley told listeners and host Mr Floyd P. Burnett aka ‘Heritage’, is one of the largest recipients of foreign direct investment in the Western Hemisphere and one of the VI’s neighbours.

“They have a lot of agriculture, and they produce a lot of products. I’m going to be taking a trade mission to the Dominican Republic to see how we can secure a trade relationship that can help us to lower the price of goods in the Virgin Islands,” he explained.

VI should plant food too- Heritage

Heritage interjected by saying, “Planting and farming should be part of that mandate of overall security too; remember people have elected you guys with a mandate concerning food.”

The Premier agreed with Heritage on his point but quickly continued, “Even if we plant food, we are not going to stop importing food into the Virgin Islands, you’ll have certain things you need to import still,” he said.

The mission, Dr Wheatley added, is to secure relationships with the Dominican Republic, and source goods at an affordable price.

The Premier said the government also plans to have a minimum basket of essential goods, of which the price can be regulated by the government.

“So that those persons in the community who are making a minimum wage would be able to afford the cost of living,” Premier Wheatley stated.

Who is we? As a man, I can’t stand Spanish women especially the santo ones. They are uneducated trash that only knows how to wash hair and work serving drinks in the bottom of the barrel rum shops.

I think this trip wiil benefit the BVI in lowering the pressure of high cost of some basic goods, especially food items. Go for it. Bring back a good report, and update us righfully asap. Things are getting critical especially for our youths, low income salary erners, and small pension social security erners. Proritise our priority needs, not our pleasurous wants.

Is the idea that VIslanders will go there to work and grow things like the old days? There will only be expats and people on work permits left to run the country.

Could be. Send BVIlanders there to cut cane and bring Santo ladies here for the bars?

It's the cost of transport and duty that raise prices, so not sure Sloman's latest bright idea will help much.

Its a good idea to look at other avenues in the Caribbean Basin yes. But we have to take our food security more seriously. We need to start to plant and fish for ourselves. Look at what is happening arounds the BVI needs a sold plan. We need to set up food storages in every district and have the government import non perishable food items in Bulk.

Let’s hope it’s not the same people who give Guyanese visa free travel to bvi and didn’t even check to see if we have the same privilege with them. I have zero confidence in these people ability to do anything or represent us well.

Are there any updates on the benefits to the BVI of the so-call high level trip to Guyana some time ago?

We don't need another delegation to go DR? Our grandparents already laid that foundation, and we have families there already. Let us find ways to advertise what goods and services we will import from D.R and how to ship them here with less hassle.

Now we have use for them (gotta smile)

hopefully this provides access to their resources and agriculture pipeline. have you seen how affordable brand new concrete built homes are in the DR? import construction materials and a workforce that can rebuild key infrastructure for a lower cost and also extend those resources to potential home builders.

Thats what you think Santo is beautiful country and a mayority of BVIslanders travel to do medicals and business. You a¡l need to stop the racist remarks Dominicans are the only people that loves all tace regardeless of where they from. Also the only country in the world that carries the bible in its flag. There are also alot of famous people there that do not need to travel to get by in life. Stop under estimating.
