NORMAN ISLAND, VI- A male tourist was reportedly bitten on the hand by a shark while in the water off Norman Island on Wednesday, January 17, 2024.

It is unclear what led to the attack; however, reports reaching our newsroom indicate the man received severe injuries to his hand although not life-threatening.

He is reportedly expected to undergo surgery at a private medical facility on Tortola today, January 18, 2024.

It is unclear the type of shark; however, our newsroom was told it was a “10-footer”.

It is also the first known shark attack in the [British] Virgin Islands in recent times.

The waters surrounding Norman Island are no fishing zones and sharks reportedly frequent the area due to the abundance of fish.

Maybe it was a Barracuda? They are unfamiliar with a lot of these creatures so it can be mistaken. Also, these are THEIR waters and homes, not ours.

Sharks keep the ecosystem in check so fishermen can keep their jobs. You jus want shark fin soup hush

$100 says it was boats feeding the fish at The Caves like they always do. Fish got all worked up, shark came by due to the excitement, went after a fish/scraps and accidentally hit the tourist who was probably in the middle of the bait ball/fish feeding frenzy.

Another $100 says it was a 4 foot reef shark. 10 foot tiger would’ve taken his whole arm, not just a bite

Thank God he is alive. You have to be very careful around Norman Island especially when tourist and locals throw food to see those beautiful fishes. I know eventually sharks will come there to get food also. Especially this time of the year when they travelled to the Caribbean sea because the big countries are too cold for them.

I don't know what happened but I have a feeling it was their own fault. Sharks don't just attack people they look for food.

      Don’t prove your name right.

      Sharks DO attack people.

Check the many news reports worldwide especially the attack in Egypt last year and many in the Bahamas recently.

Sharks, they only bite when you touch their private parts.

The ocean is the territorybof the shark and other sea life, so what's the big deal. Same way a dog will bite you on land.
