GREENLAND, Tortola, VI -Action got underway in the LIME Superfast T20 League on Sunday February 7, 2016 at Greenland Playing Field, with RTW beating the Island Boys by 8 wickets in Division One and the Vikings holding their nerve to beat the Royal Knights by 4 wickets in the Premier Division.

Batting first, the Island Boys rattled up 202 – 4 from their 20 overs as the opening pair of Dennisford Brown (50) and Jack Durand (25) put on 85 for the first wicket. Keelan Robin (30) and Wayne Phillip (45) boosted the score past 200, but it never seemed likely to be enough on a fast true pitch and small outfield.

In the reply, RTW lost two quick wickets, but then Austin McDowall (81*) and Joel Williams, with an unbeaten 102 from just 48 balls and with 13 fours and 7 sixes, saw their team home with 4 overs to spare.

The pair added 189 for the third wicket and Williams was a very happy man.

“It feels really good to get a hundred,” he commented. “It’s been a long time coming and I’m happy it helped my team win. We always had confidence in chasing down any total and with Austin encouraging me at the other end, we just waited on bad balls and took our time.”

In the Premier Division, the Royal Knights batted first, but lost wickets regularly on their way to a paltry 177 all out. Only Ryan Mangal with 59 from 39 balls and Julian St Clair with 51 from 22 had any answer to the persistence of the Vikings attack, which was led by Johnny Bailey’s 3 for 40.

The chase though was not without its hiccups as it took a steady innings from Collis Fraser to guide the Vikings home. Vishal Munesar notched a half century at the top of the innings, but once he fell Fraser was left with much work to do, before, with wickets starting to tumble at the other end, he steered the Vikings home with an over to spare.

Fraser finished unbeaten on 62 with 8 fours and 1 six, whilst St Clair was the pick of the Royal Knights bowling, finishing with 3 for 33.

“It was an exciting knock and I’m happy to have joined this team and see them home with a win in the first game. It was getting tight, but I was able to remain focused and concentrated on my batting.”

Fixtures for February 14, 2016 include Wolues against Under The Tree at 10.00am and Cavaliers against Grenada at 2pm.

Cricket has always been a sport in the BVI even before softball, there are still some members of the Baughers bay cricket team still living to day. Check Hambruk Mercer, Aubrey Pickering, Cannon Fahie at the taxi stands for information, They were members of the only unbeaten Cricket team ever in the BVI. Even Hon. Ralph T. Oneal can give info.

Thank you Nellie for setting the record straight! There are other locals who were very much into cricket and still are. I feel sorry for the younger generation and their lack of knowledge about the sporting history of the BVI...smh.
