ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- After winning the first ever Groovy Soca Monarch in 2013, Martino ‘Tino’ Marks lost the title in 2014 but rebounded this year to reclaim his title with the song Ah Begging on Sunday July 26, 2015.

Meanwhile, Pascal (born Dante Wattley), who placed First Runner Up to Tino in the Groovy segment two years ago, was crowned the winner of the VI Style category at the LIME Soca Monarch staged at Fantasea in Duffs Bottom.

According to Tino, winning back the crown was redemption for him and said he was pleased to reap the rewards of his efforts. “It feels really good. It’s redemption for sure. It feels good to be producing good music on a consistent basis,” Tino told Virgin Islands News Online.

The winning song, Ah begging, was written by himself and Craig Christopher of Antigua and produced by Shawn Mitchell of Grenada.

Tino commended the competition and said it was indicative of the improved quality of music in the VI. “There were many great songs in the competition so I think it was very tight. The main thing is that the artistes have been raising the level of music.”

The popular singer of the Hardcore Band of Virgin Gorda said he would be appearing in the Patsy Lake Festiville on Monday and also has an engagement in Antigua this week.

Second place in the Groovy category was Teejay.

VI Style category winner Pascal aka Stingy told Virgin Islands News Online he was surprised at the win as he had entered at the last minute after an earlier engagement was cancelled. “I made some calls and we put something together at the last minute. I wanted to participate to show support and have fun but never went in for the win.

Asked if he would return to defend his title next year, however, Pascal said: “I will be competing until I lose. That’s how it has to be.”

Second place in the VI Style category went to Kylo.

The winners of each category received $5000 in prizes and a trip to St Maarten.

The competition was promoted by HD Promotions in collaboration with Grate VI Music Alliance.

Eustace ‘Boss’ Freeman of Grate VI Music Alliance congratulated the winners and said the event “went fairly well considering Sunday night away from village. We are already thinking on ways to improve the competition next year."

One thing I would like people to do is start taking this competition more

I was soo excited for this but only to be disappointed.
first thing, the stage was way too small. additionally, this is a big competition throughout the Caribbean. if we are not going to take it seriously, then we don't need to do it. the songs by the artists were awful. there needed to be an elimination round and we also needed to hear the songs( soca songs) on the radio months before the competition.. not one or two days. we got to do better. additionally, the vi style was way too long. and why did it take so long to start the second segment.. not to mention the first segment started way to late. it was in a bad location... it needs to be in the village..honestly.. teejay had the better song but tino performed better...McKenzie was very disappointing.. nobody else is worth mentioning.. come on.. lets stop being so sloppy and lazy.. get serious.
