This Week We Feature – Young Professional – Sheryl Rosan

June 4th, 2010 | Tags: Young Professional
Ms. Rosan tells today's youth to 'go for the gold'.
This week we would like to recognize 34-year-old Virgin Islander, Sheryl Rosan.

Ms. Rosan is currently a lawyer with C.E. Dawson & Co. in Tortola.  She practices many aspects of law including crime, family law, land law, and contract law.

“Practicing crime law used to be my favourite because I used to watch those court shows on television when I was a little girl and I found it very interesting” said Ms. Rosan.  “I now enjoy land law because it surrounds family and I enjoy helping the families find a way to settle their land disputes.”

Born in the BVI, Ms. Rosan attended East End School, Seventh-day Adventist Primary, and BVI High School (now the Elmore Stoutt High School).   After high school, she continued on to the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College HLSCC to obtain an associate’s degree in general business administration.   Ms. Rosan then travelled to Northumbria University to receive a bachelor of law and a master’s degree in commercial law.

Ms. Rosan feels that because the way the laws are written it is often easier to find solutions to land disputes out of court.  “We start at the bottom of the ladder in trying to find ways to resolve an issue, we don’t go speedily to court, we treat the court as a last resort.”

She also feels especially prone to assisting families. “In court, families may find they get a resolution they were not expecting, so in certain situations it’s better to mediate the matter as a family,” Ms. Rosan said.

“I have been able to help many people that have come to these chambers and my joy is to see the satisfaction on their faces,” she added when speaking on her career.  “On the flip side there was a point I wanted to be a singer.  At one point I wanted to be a Whitney Houston, my favourite artist.”

Besides an interest in singing, Ms. Rosan has been kept busy recently with the addition of a baby, now 2 months old, to her family.

While balancing time for her new baby and time for work, Ms. Rosan still has career aspirations to become a judge in the jurisdiction for the Supreme Court.

Growing up and working in the BVI, Ms. Rosan knows the difficulties that can arise as a young female professional.  “When I wanted to go to law school I was met with blockades, when one door closed I would try and find another one until I succeeded.  It seems young people now give up too easy, nothing comes easy, it’s not just a briefcase and outfit, it goes much deeper.”

She does remain optimistic for the next generation of young professionals simply saying “go after the prize.”
