This Week We Feature Young Professional Shamoii A. Dagou
If he was to be given superhero powers we could rest assure that we would have a local Superman or Spiderman ready to rush to the rescue. Nevertheless, your Young Professional, who has often emerged the hero on the basketball court, is already a superhero by heart and ambition.
Shamoii A. Dagou currently works part-time with Khoy’s Mailing Service as he is also a student of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) where he is reading for an Associate’s Degree in Electronic Engineering.
Our Young Professional is a product of the Enis Adams Primary School and the Elmore Stoutt High School.
Basketball talent
Although basketball is not a profession that Shamoii intends to purse, at least not anymore, it would be remiss of us not to elaborate somewhat on his exploits in the game.
Cool, calm and collected when he is off the court, Shamoii transforms into an energetic, exciting and extraordinary skilful character on the court and is arguably one of the brightest talents on the local basketball scene.
In fact, Shamoii was one of the inspirations behind Splash Brothers reaching the final of the recent 3rd Annual Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed National Basketball League. He was named MVP of the Eastern Division Conference Championship. And even though his team would be swept by West Gunners in the final, Shamoii was always there leading the fight with his amazing talent.
For Shamoii, though, basketball these days is just about having fun, noting that he did try out for teams in South Carolina, United States but wasn’t able to land a permanent spot on any squad. “I was in the States for a couple of months but it didn’t work out so I came back home. For me now basketball is about having fun. I don’t take it too seriously anymore.”
Nevertheless, Shamoii would like to see the game further develop in the Virgin Islands and opportunities made available for youngsters to get exposure overseas.
“I would like to see more people come out to the games and show more interest and support to the players. I would also like to see more youth get the opportunity to go overseas on basketball scholarships and try-outs. I want everyone to see how it is to play basketball in the United States.”
While he is more known for his basketball ability, Shamoii also plays baseball and softball. He is a member of the Power Outage softball team. In fact, he is a natural athlete and plays most sports. “Sports is my hobby,” Shamoii noted.
Mr Cool
Being actively involved in a sport like basketball where things often get physical and tempers flare, Shamoii is never one to lose his cool even when things are not going his way and team mates are succumbing emotionally to the pressure.
This is a noteworthy attribute that makes our Young Professional a role model for young basketballers.
“I don’t take on everything. I let things play out for themselves. I don’t take on stress, that makes no sense,” our Young Professional shared.
Inspiration & advice
When asked about the persons who inspire him the most, Shamoii did not hesitate to mention his parents Joseph and Debra Dagou.
“They have always encouraged me to keep pushing and never give up. Strive for what you want, and never give up.”
This same advice that Shamoii holds dear to his heart is what he wishes to share with the territory’s youth.
Superhero!
And now to return to the ‘Superhero’ part! Shamoii surprised us when he disclosed that while he is studying to become an electronic engineer, he would really love to become a fireman.
Asked why, Shamoii said he just has this desire to be a fireman, and it’s a feeling that he is unable to explain. He said the passion to become a fireman began to burn deep some two years ago. “I want to be able to help people and save lives.”
It must be said that Shamoii does not strike you as fireman material as he is not gifted with much height or bulging biceps which we often associate fireman with. However, as he has continuously proven on the basketball court, he can be a David among Goliaths and has the heart to do anything and become anything he wants to be, even a fireman who would always be ready and willing to put his life on the line for others.
That’s already a superhero in the books of many!
