This Week We Feature Young Professional Michelle L. Georges
Today, Mrs. Georges holds the position of Deputy Director, Banking within the Banking and Fiduciary Services Division of the BVI Financial Services Commission (BVIFSC).
Born on Tortola, and raised in Sea Cow’s Bay, this former student of the Ebenezer Thomas Primary School, and then BVI High School now Elmore Stoutt High School landed her first job, at Deloitte and Touche as a Trainee Accountant.
The young professional did not stray from her prospective career path and proceeded to pursue her undergraduate studies at the George Mason University in Virginia, USA, in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting. She spent a year and a half there before relocating to the United States Virgin Islands where she completed her studies at the University of the Virgin Islands, St. Thomas.
The dedicated daughter of Realdis and Iva Todman said her relocation was because of her mom’s illness at the time and being in the USVI placed her closer to home.
Upon completion of her studies, Mrs. Georges took up a short stint of employment with the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force as the Accounts Payable Supervisor before transferring to the then Financial Services Department (now the BVI Financial Services Commission) where she remained until 2006.
During those early years at the Financial Services Department, the young professional started out as an Assistant Inspector within the Banks, Trust Companies and Company Managers Division, where she was charged with the responsibility of supervising the respective financial services businesses that fell within the remit of this division. Prior to her departure from the Commission in 2006, Mrs. Georges had ascended to the role of Senior Regulator in the Banking and Fiduciary Services Division. Mrs. Georges then spent the next three years as a Commercial Relationship Officer with Banco Popular, St. Thomas.
In May of this year, 2010, Mrs. Georges returned home and considered herself fortunate to rejoin the Commission in her current capacity as Deputy Director, Banking.
She credits her appreciation for this new role, within the Commission, to her experiences on “both sides of the fence”, that is from being the Regulator to becoming the Regulated and back.
Asked what she enjoys most about her job at the BVIFSC, the Young Professional who holds an MBA degree in Finance from Wright State University and is also a member of the International Compliance Association, said with pride, “Being a part of an organization that invests heavily in its human resource via providing an avenue for growth and advancement. I also enjoy the sharing of knowledge between myself and my colleagues (both internal and external)”.
While she acknowledged that her job is a challenge, she views this as a “welcomed” challenge as she enjoys deeply what she does.
Looking ahead in her career, Mrs. Georges said the process is ongoing.
Mrs. Georges made it clear that her future aspirations have little to do with “corporate” titles but rather it has to do with her social responsibility to her community and youth.
Noting the importance of putting God in everything that we do and the need to have the support of those around us, she had this advice to give to young people.
“In whatever you do there will be doubts and fears but do not ever succumb to them. Use them as your driving force, with the aim of overcoming them. That will take you through school, family, job and through life and always acknowledge that there is a higher power to which we owe everything,” said Mrs. Georges who grew up in the church and is an avid parishioner of the St. Paul’s Episcopal Anglican Church, Sea Cow’s Bay.
Asked what helped to keep her focused in her career path and life over the years, the Young Professional credited the support from both her parents, all her siblings, her husband Sean Georges Sr. and her two kids Sean Georges and Sydni Georges.
