This week we feature Young Professional McKenzie L. K. Baltimore Jr
The words, "I have a dream", made popular by the great Martin Luther King Jr are used by so many of us today but how often do we wake up from that dream and start to trek the journey of life to make that dream a reality?
For a great part, many of us come to the point of chasing our dreams not that early but for our Young Professional of the week, Mr McKenzie L. K. Baltimore Jr who is still in the infancy stages of his young adult life, he has pegged sneakers on that gives him the needed grip to stay on the ground as he spares no time in chasing his dreams, dreams that have become reality, dreams that are going through phases of development and dreams that are paving the way for more dreaming.
Many of his friends, family and associates call him B'More, a name he is quite comfortable with.
Baltimore Jr is a Virgin Islander with a passion for the arts. He is 25 years of age, earns his daily dollar at the British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) as a Patients Relations Officer (PRO). In that position he has the technical responsibilities that come with mediating all the patients and the staff. In so doing he defines the culture of trust and lowering the anxiety levels of the patients and staff.
"I am very passionate about the arts, I am very passionate about what I do, I love God and I love music. I have no kids (lol) but I cherish family and the values of a grounded family. I came from a Christian background where I keep the constancy of God and family first at all times."
He is in love with his job at the BVIHSA and gives it the best shot at all times. His cheerful personality and ability to warm one's spirit, engage in a mature conversation, and wipe a frown off a face and plaster it with a smile or laughter, are at an all time high.
However, for B'More, as he chose to be addressed in this article, his true career lies in his passion and love for what he does in the music industry as an artist. He is a song writer, singer and an excellent onstage performer. His favourite liming spots are at Facebook/bmoresmusic, Twitter/bmoresmusic, www.bmoresmusic.com and Instagram.com/thebmoreshow where he get the opportunity to promote his passion and at the same time interact with his fans.
He currently attends music school in Orlando, Florida, USA, Full Sail University, which gives him the opportunity to do his final classes for this stage of his studies online. This allows him the time to be among the people he loves the most. "I graduate this summer so in a couple of months I graduate, yea yea."
He is studying Music Business along the line of being a Manager, an Artist Representative, a Label Owner and things along that line.
Some of us would be familiar with one of the greatest singing groups in times past "The melodious singers". Yes, indeed it was a singing sensation gospel group that his mother was part of and which tells the genesis of his passion for music and singing.
"I remember the first time I sang in church. I was only 8 years old and I sang the song 'Use me', I remember that so well although it was so long ago, it is fresh in my memory as if it was yesterday. It was at the New Life Baptist Church," recalled B'More.
Growing up he had a love for sports but always knew he had a deeper passion for music. "But sports was always there and the opportunities presented themselves and so I went where the opportunities were." At the age of 14 years he was awarded a baseball scholarship, which he made full use of and had to move to Atlanta, Georgia where he lived for a year before returning to the Virgin Islands.
"But then I went back but didn't get into college because at that stage of my life I was fighting to find my purpose in life. I believe if you are going to school you should always do something that you love."
Today he has his first album out with 11 great songs. It’s a must have no matter if you are a music lover or not. "I use to sneak in to listen to the likes of Brian McKnight and Usher and Music Soul Child and things of that sort. I developed or was able to connect with what was really deep in my soul."
He was often been given the opportunity right at home in the Virgin Islands to put his passion on market by performing at various shows, including pageants, Miss BVI shows and most recently he has been and will be again this weekend at the ever popular BVI Music Fest. He also did VI Idol in 2012 where he was adjudged 2nd Runner-up.
"There was a local boys gospel group, Genesis, where I started out but then I branched out to do RnB and the likes of those, got some exposure in the [United] States then I came back home and started getting colourful."
For B’More, living his dream has been a long and tough journey but he has been able to skilfully stay on the right path. He was keen in noting that there were avenues and moments where he could have side tracked and ended up among the non-desirables of life. "I have to say this, doing drugs is one of the things I have pledged myself never to get involved with and would make this my message to youths out there. It is not the path to take, it’s that path that leads to a sudden destruction, don't go there, the signs are all over, read and follow."
His advice to fellow youths is to do what you have to do but always keep God first. "That's a category by itself. You must first do that because when you do the directions come and when the directions come the right people will also come." He said connecting with the right people that can positively influence one’s life adds much substance in chartering the course of one's life.
B'More also advised that having a solid root in education is very important. "You may not be as academically inclined as some others are but find and keep the education root well grounded and nourished." He also noted that mistakes will be made along the journey but it’s for one to learn from, "jot it down, have a broad shoulder, learn from those mistakes and keep on keeping on."
Once you have a copy of his new album 'Inside Out', the inspiration will be kept alive. Persons can access this album on B'More's new website www.bmoresmusic.com.
Our Young Professional also advised persons to, "give yourself the chance to show the most beautiful part of you, show who you are from the inside out."
