This Week We Feature Young Professional Kevis J. Hughes
Serial entrepreneur Kevis J. Hughes is juggling three businesses while navigating life in the Virgin Islands. While owning and managing three businesses may seem like a daunting task for most, our Young Professional says each of his companies shares a piece of his heart.
Early Beginning
Born in St Kitts & Nevis, Kevis said he came to the Virgin Islands when he was just two weeks old and has called the VI home ever since.
He attended St George's Primary and then BVI High School, graduating in 2003.
Kevis then went on to study at New York University (NYU) in courses related to Marketing Certification/Management Training and Tourism Management.
He is the owner of Marketing and public Relations Firm- KTJ Marketing & PR; Kiss The Jeweler and KTM Yacht Support. Kevis said for Kiss the Jeweler, which is a jewelry and watch repair company, he decided to start that business after working in jewelry sales years back at Colombian Emeralds.
Building a Career
“It was organic for me wanting to build a career on that ground that was set. KTJ Marketing & PR, that love started from working at the BVI Tourist Board, and just like that I ended up working with high-profile companies assisting with marketing concepts, and doing lots of traveling. KTM Yacht Support happened after I went to a boat show overseas and realised that I actually wanted to carry on my love for tourism,” he said.
Kevis said each of his companies shares a different piece of his heart, and while each one presents a different challenge and a different magnitude to manage, the common factor among the three is the need to work with clients.
He said his inspiration for each career choice came from different takes on life and different mentors. Kiss the Jeweler came from a love for jewelry/watches and Marketing came from his life in Tourism.
“As a child, I just did what I loved and as I got older those loves took shape into the careers now,” he added.
Parting advice
For young people looking to pursue a dream or goal, Kevis urges them to learn the rules of the trade so they can "break" them well. He further reminded youths, “Your passion is yours and only ypu would have the drive to pursue that passion, not anyone else”.
