This Week We Feature Young Professional Jasin C. Rhymer
This week’s young professional is a risk taker, who lives by his motto “everything in life is a gamble”.
Thirty-two year old Jasin Ryhmer is a young entrepreneur who is part owner and manages three beauty salons, a mini bar and two barber shops in Road Town.
Ironically, prior to being his own boss, this young man was a Facility Manager for Shell now re-branded Sol, where he worked from 1999 to 2009. He was in charge of the Virgin Islands’ depot and received and distributed oil, fuel or lubricants to consumers in a timely fashion.
“I had to report to Barbados on a weekly basis to give them a report on the gains or losses of each product, how much stock I had, those kinds of things because we had to operate in a safe environment. As you know, fuel is a dangerous thing,” he explained.
Although he was satisfied with his job, his dream was to be his own boss and it all became a reality with the full support from his mother, Ishma Edwards.
“There was a beauty salon in 2007, Nu Image. Actually my mother saw the ad in the newspaper; she called me and asked if I was interested. To be honest at first I was scared because I never really thought of managing beauticians and barbers,” he said with a grin.
He admitted he wanted to get into trucking, but his mother who is quite the ‘worrier was adamant that he considered another career choice. “She did not want me to get into heavy equipment.”
And while he did not have his heart fully into the business, his mother persuaded him it was a good venture - one that he has not regretted!
“After we bought Nu Image, we renovated it and improve the image and finances,” Mr. Rhymer divulged.
With business booming, the ambitious young man decided a barber shop will complement the salon and soon after Nu Designs Barber Shop and Snack Bar was purchased in 2008.
The acquisition of the barber shop was just the beginning, because by the end of 2008, Million Hair Beauty Salon, located by the Botanical Station, was purchased. Shortly after, that This Is It Beauty Salon and Barber Shop was also acquired.
The young professional admitted that it was a bit overwhelming for him in managing the businesses since he was not au fait with the ‘beauty world’.
“I cut my hair every week, however I did not know anything about the beauty industry but now being in it for the past four years I have learnt a lot about hair care which I am still learning. I usually work alongside with the hair stylists and barbers…I know of the different relaxers, treatments, colours that kind of stuff…one of these days I will take up a machine and try my hand on my son, in the meantime I will just observe,” he said with a laugh.
He added that he left Shell after realizing he was not spending enough time with his own employees which he believes in a key ingredient to a successful business. “I used to check in with them when I was on my lunch and after hours. So I had to make a decision. I missed Shell at first but you know....I think I made the right decision,” he said with a shrug.
The father of two describes himself as a reserved and determined individual. He said his 13 year-old son Jasin Jr. who seems a bit keen on the mini bar. His other son is two year-old J’sani.
A product of the Althea Scatliffe primary, Mapps College in Barbados and the then BVI High School, this young professional decided to enter the work force shortly after graduating. He did a one year stint at the BVI Ports Authority before landing the job at Shell.
When asked if he plans to pursue a higher education, Mr. Rhymer replied, “I did try but you know…what I want to do is some management courses online.” He also revealed that while he did not regret furthering his studies, he would advise the youngsters to do so because according to him “once you enter the work force it is difficult to take time out to study".
Touching on the stigma of young men being wayward, Mr. Ryhmer is of the belief that many of the youth enter gangs/groups to be popular. However, he opined that is not cool. His advice to them is to work for that respect and popularity.
“We are a small community, and it does not make sense,” he added.
One thing that many may not know about this savvy businessman is that he likes to dabble with cars, and while he has no intention of honing in that skill, his future plans are to broaden his salons and barber shops. In addition to that, he has begun purchasing hair products to sell wholesale.
