Mr. Henry O. Creque has met the challenge of balancing family life and his professional career with endurance, support from his family, and a strong belief that one should avoid preconceived notions in all manner of pursuits.

The 35 year-old Young Professional, who was born in Tortola, gives life to the Virgin Islands as the Transmission and Distribution Engineer for the BVI Electricity Corporation. Creque manages the distribution of electrical power to the various areas in the Virgin Islands.

“Working as the Manager for the Department of Transmission and Distribution, one of five departments in BVI Electricity, I manage the territory’s transmission and distribution grid which supplies the electrical energy utilized throughout Tortola and many of the sister islands,” he said. “Power supply is something that most people take for granted, and quite frankly, they have every right to. With this responsibility, the entire BVIEC team strives to meet the sometimes challenging task of ensuring everyone in the Virgin Islands has that power.”

The Virgin Islander spoke of the drive behind his success, stating he has always wanted to serve the Territory to the best of his ability. “Generally speaking, the T & D Department in BVI Electricity has been viewed positively for a long time. Even from the years predating my tenure as head,” he said. “We depend on the whole team to deliver and even in the most adverse circumstances, we work very well together, fulfilling our collective desire to serve the Territory.”

The Young Professional also expressed BVIEC’s commitment to improving overall customer service levels.“We recognize that there is room for improvement in customer service levels throughout the organization, and we are committed to making improvements by listening to our customers and developing our human and physical resources to meet their expectations,” he said.

Mr. Creque’s vast educational background crosses a variety of subjects. “I am pursuing a Masters of Science in Management from Manchester Metropolitan University, and have achieved an Executive Diploma in Management from the Chartered Management Institute in 2007, a Bachelors of Electrical Engineering with Highest Honours from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1996, and a minor in Economics with GPA 4.0/4.0 also in 1996.”

The BVI Electricity Corporation employee distinguishes himself in the professional world by using what he learned from travelling and by employing a belief in his professional life that one should have no preconceived notions. “I have tried to travel as much as possible,” he said. “I love to analyze different value systems and do my best to leave all preconceived concepts out of the equation. Because I have been surprised by culture differences in my travels and also had my preconceived theories invalidated, it has taught me to shun both expectations of people and preconceived ideas. I attempt to judge things for what they are.”

Mr. Creque continued: “Another huge benefit I have drawn from travelling is discovering more creative and innovative ways of resolving issues in life as well as in a professional capacity. There is so much to learn out there and you can adapt those new ways of life to assist your own growth and development. ”

The Young Professional explained he has no regrets and would not change anything in his life to date, but attempts to keep himself prepared for all eventualities, as he expressed his happiness with his current path. “I try to prepare myself for any opportunities that may come my way and any adverse scenarios. My main ambition has always been to work with technology, because I loved both mathematics and science at school, so I’m very content with my job.”

The Transmission and Distribution Engineer/Manager reminisced about his upbringing, that brought him to the career and life he has today. “I lived amongst all my family growing up, which includes my extended family. I was fortunate enough to have a mother who always gives 100% and taught me the same principle.”

He said: “From my grandmother, I have learned to have a strong faith in God and to allow Him to direct my paths. My stepfather’s patient, strong resolve also influenced my character,” he continued. “Growing up in the BVI, I must say that I am extremely appreciative for the many positive influences I’ve been fortunate to have - from family members, to teachers, friends and co-workers.You know, I also remember the local butcher in one village where I grew up, a huge man called Liston. He was a large imposing guy, but he helped instil good morals and principles in me when I was growing up.”

Mr. Creque's story continued: “I can recall one morning when I went past him without saying anything. He called me over with a wiggle of his finger. I was scared, but I went over. He told me to “always say good morning”. From that day forward, I have always greeted people. Anything Liston said was ingrained in me because of his imposing demeanour, which was good because I learned some very important principles and ethics at a young age, which I bring to my professional and family life.”

Mr. Creque also draws a huge amount of encouragement from his wife and three children. “I have been married for almost ten years and I have three children. My family’s love keeps my flame alight and they have provided a lot of support for my professional life.”

The Young Professional, who has committed himself to volunteer work over the years through the Technical and Vocational Education Steering Committee, St. Georges Secondary School Fundraising Committee, New Life Boy’s Brigade, the BVI Tennis Association, and the Rotary Club of Tortola, ended: “In the future, regardless of where my professional path may lead, I would like to contribute more and more of my time and resources to philanthropic service.”

Excellent Article Henry. I pray God's richest blessings upon you as you continue on your path to success. You are the shining star at the Electricity Corporation for sure! One question for you though, how do you do all that and still pursue a masters degree? That is proof positive that you are committed. I know "1st hand" that it is not easy pursing an online degree with young kids. Just completed my degree (remember? . . .smile)
