A change of career can sometimes be a set-back in life as the transitional phase alone sometimes takes longer than expected and may even lead to frustration on the job. This, however, is hardly the case for our featured Young Professional Ganiecia I. Smith, a Personal Banking Officer with Scotiabank, Tortola.

Ganiecia actually started out in a different field of work as she was involved in medical claims billing as an employee before running her own company in the United States and later returning to the Virgin Islands. She started out with Scotiabank in March 2008 and today is one of the top persons in that position even as her ultimate goal is to one day return to having her own business.

A Personal Banking Officer, Ganiecia says helps people to achieve their financial goals as well as provide mortgages, loans, credit cards the “basic things that assists the customer to reach where he or she needs to be in life”.

Sitting at a desk and dealing with customers from day to day may not seem very exciting for some but it can certainly be concluded that once the heart is in something there is never room for monotony. In fact Ganiecia tells us that there is always something new to learn on a daily basis at Scotiabank, which makes every day interesting. Our Young Professional also said her greatest joy is seeing a customer walk away with a smile of satisfaction. “That for me is very special.”

Her challenge, Ganiecia tells us, is not always being able to please everyone with what they would want but does everything in her power to give them what they need.

But Ganiecia admitted that working at a bank was not exactly where she figured she was going to be working someday as after finishing school here in the Virgin Islands she left for the United States where she was able to acquire a University Associate’s Degree in Business Management. She then did medical billing in Maryland before venturing out to form her own company that also specialized in Medical Claims Billing.

Moving back to the Virgin Islands and starting a new career was of course a challenge for our Young Professional but she said her consistent desire to succeed coupled with welcoming and helpful staff at Scotiabank, especially Lynette Smith and Joycelyn Maureen, made life much easier for her. With a grateful heart, she said the bank helps not only its customers but also its employees, including furthering their studies. Ganiecia is one of the proud beneficiaries. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management.

Ganiecia wishes to see herself above the position of Personal Banking Officer in the near future as well as partnering with her better half to develop their already home renovation company. She hopes too that the business would be carried on by their children.

Asked why she is not looking at getting back to Medical Claims Billing, Our Young Professional said her research on the possibilities have not been encouraging since the medical field is changing every day and that the policies and procedures now being put in place makes it harder for such opportunities that she once enjoyed.

Ganiecia’s discipline, determination and focus to succeed regardless of the career or job at hand comes as no fluke, however, as she said she grew up with a strong spiritual background, which is her foundation today as a professional and a family person.

“I let God be my guide…I actually grew up in the Seventh Day Adventist Church and this spiritual life I have carried on to my adult life, which assists me in staying focus and grounded”.

She said too her parents always encouraged her to be a better person, which she continues to strive for.

Her advice to youths is nothing strange as most of our already featured young professionals have said the same thing but she is one more person who can bear testimony to the fact that those wishing to do positive things in life should surround themselves with positive people and to always keep focused on achieving that desired goal in life.

“If you have a dream to establish yourself in a career that you love, be determined to realize it and when people try to discourage you, work even harder at it,” Ganiecia adds.
