This Week We Feature Young Professional Delbert R. Samuel
The male teacher is a ‘dying breed’; however, Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) and the Virgin Islands education system are still fortunate to have Delbert R. Samuel.
Samuel has been a Science Teacher at Elmore Stoutt High School for the past 7 years.
“My desire for teaching was inspired by altruism and a passion for helping others,” Samuel told Virgin Islands News Online.
Education
Samuel is a proud product of Francis Lettsome Primary School in East End and the BVI High School (now Elmore Stoutt High School).
Our Young Professional has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology, which he attained at Florida State University.
“My experience at Florida State University was very instrumental in preparing me for my job as a science teacher,” Samuel said of this tertiary educational journey.
Joy of Teaching
According to American journalist, historian, academic, and novelist Henry Brook Adams, “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops."
This is exactly what Mr Samuel may be doing without thinking about it exactly that way.
“The thing I enjoy most about teaching is the empowerment education brings. Being able to impart knowledge to my students and observe their success firsthand, as they are able to effectively apply what they’ve learned, is indeed rewarding,” Samuel said.
Challenges
There is a saying that teaching is a labour of love as it is a time-demanding job, and involves dealing with children of different learning ability, culture and behaviour, while often getting little financial reward and recognition.
In fact, research has shown that poor pay and indiscipline by students are two of the major factors the male teacher is no longer choosing the profession and is leaving.
Samuel admitted his biggest struggle is behavioural issues by students.
“All jobs have their challenges, and teaching is no exception. For me, the biggest is dealing with the negative attitudes and poor behaviour. But I’ve been able to confront this challenge through self-mastery and learning to better connect with them. I also credit my success over the years to the amazing support of my colleagues, which has become a fixture,” he said.
Hobbies
Outside of the classroom, Samuel enjoys reading and playing basketball.
He currently plays with the A’s basketball team, which represents the Fourth District in the local district league.
“As an avid consumer of sports, I’ve drawn a lot of inspiration from athletes. Tim Duncan, Francis N’ganue and Usain Bolt are three athletes whose lives have greatly encouraged me,” Samuel shared.
Advice to youths
Delbert R. Samuel advises young people to follow their dreams by working hard and trusting in God.
“To the youth of our territory aspiring for a career in education or any other field, I would like to remind you firstly that successful careers are not easily achieved. They require diligence, tenacity, and hard work. But with God’s help, it is possible. So, whatever you do, do it diligently from the heart and you will succeed.”

You are a very positive young man, and your parents must be very proud of you. Indeed, the whole BVI should be proud of you.
Blessings.
