This Week We Feature Young Professional Darryll P. Bess
Darryll Bess, a proud Virgin Islander, is a self-employed Graphic Designer and designer of his own clothing line. His ultimate goal is to be a successful entrepreneur and market his clothing line in neighbouring islands and eventually to the United States.
At first glance, Bess looks like a shy young man, but when he speaks, it’s evident that he’s an ambitious and driven individual.
Since graduating from New England Technical Institute in June 2011, this young professional has been busy coming up with ideas on how to promote his clothing business – BayRoc – upon his return home.
“I started BayRoc when I was 19,” Bess stated. “What I do is hand paint artwork on clothes which has appealed to many young people here.”
Asked what motivated him to venture into the world of creative art, Bess summed it up to one word “curiosity”.
“I started with spray cans, and then discovered a more lucrative way to improve my skills and earn some money,” he said with a smile. “So through trial and error, I was able to master the skills.”
And though he works out of his Cane Garden Bay home, Bess admitted that business could not have been better. According to him, his clientele is increasing because of the unique service he provided. He designs tee-shirts, sneakers, dresses, hoodies, pants, and any other kind of clothing a client wants.
Against this backdrop, the young professional is aggressively pushing to have his work seen and appreciated publicly.
“I am trying to expand next year. To do a little bit faster production so that I could sell my clothing line in stores. I have already spoken to a few stores here who are interested. All I have to do now is set myself up to ensure I can maintain my flow, which I am working on,” Bess said.
Describing himself as self-motivated, Bess is optimistic that his art form can “test the times” because his mantra to his business is all about quality.
“BayRoc is quality, because people want to have that distinctive look so that is where I come in,” he said with a smile.
He added, “People like to lime and they like to look good. So clients keep coming back for more. No two pieces of clothing are similar. BayRoc is an exclusive brand based on art and individuality. BayRoc has fresh and creative clothing that is hand-painted and manufactured with finesse and close attention to detail. BayRoc is innovative; BayRoc is the essence of style; BayRoc is young; BayRoc is Art; BayRoc does not confirm to the norm; BayRoc will continue to maintain a reputation for pushing the boundary in creating new designs for its customers with unique apparel and artistic flair making this label an empire”.
Potential clients can log onto his website http://wix.com/bayroc/clothing to view some of Bess’ masterpieces.
Armed with an Associate Degree in Graphic Designs, Bess also has plans to open a Graphic Design business in the near future, but prior to that he had a vested interest in Architecture.
After graduating from the then BVI High School, this young professional was a Trainee in the Town and Country Planning Department, and with the encouragement from his parents, enrolled at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College.
However, wanting to be a more independent young man, Bess worked at Infinite Solutions for about a year before departing to further his education in Architecture at the New England Tech, Rhode Island, USA.
“After a few months, I switched to Graphic Designs, and to be honest it was not so hard because I knew some of the programmes that were taught,” he explained.
For now the young professional is quite happy to have his two passions collide and has pledged to conquer all obstacles to reach success.
He also credited his mother, Lydia Cline, for always “watching his back” and advised young men “to start business or something because it’s the small businesses that matter and drive this country. Start a business and make your money rather than turn to crime.”
