This Week We Feature Young Professional Christine L. Stevens
Born and raised in the Virgin Islands, 24-year-old Christine Latoya Stevens, an aspiring businesswoman and social worker, is thankful for the strong bonds with family that have her what she is today.
She credits the sacrifices of her single parent mom and the love and support of her three other siblings for making things possible for her.
“I grew up in a single parent home with my mom/dad Ellery Stevens and my other three siblings,” she said. “Growing up with a single parent is never easy, however, my ‘super mom’ made everything possible for me and I am forever grateful for all of her sacrifices,” said our Young Professional.
The Virgin Gorda resident said that she graduated from the Bregado Flax Educational Centre Secondary Division with a Grade one. In school her favourite subjects were Art and Technical Drawing.
The part time student of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College has gained valuable knowledge in her last job as a Guest Services Agent at the Rosewood Little Dix Bay in Virgin Gorda.
“I will now be working at Health Services Authority in the Client Service Department and will certainly be working my way up,” she said, adding with confidence that in a couple of years she hopes to be working as a clinical social worker following completion of her studies.
“I am currently attending H. Lavity Stoutt Community College part time where I have a focus in Human Services. I would like to one day become a Social Worker where I can help people in need, and make a difference,” she said.
“I recently resigned from my previous job at Rosewood Little Dix Bay where I was a Guest Services Agent. Boy will I miss that place. I have grown tremendously [there] and my support team was amazing,” she said.
Our Young Professional told us that she started out as an Airport Greeter and it was only up from there. “In the three years I've worked there, I was awarded Most Outstanding Employee and an award for Service Excellence,” she said.
“Costumer service means a whole lot to me. Never think that customers have no other choices. Deliver exceptional service and that costumer will keep on coming back. Not because that place looks great or the food was great, but because you took customer service to another level. That costumer will always remember you!” she advised those in the customer service industry.
While busy with work and part time studies, our Young Professional still finds time for serving her community through the Rotaract Club.
“I am a proud member of the Rotaract Club of Virgin Gorda. All the members are like family. They are who I spend most of my time with and I appreciate them very much for they have made a positive impact in my life,” she said.
“They have helped me to grow personally and professionally. I wouldn't trade them for the world,” she said. “I am also proud to say that I was elected as our new Community Service Director for our upcoming year in June,” she stated proudly.
Our Young Professional also enjoys enhancing people's beauty by braiding, styling and weaving their hair. “One day, I must open my own hair salon. It's been a dream since I was younger and it must be fulfilled,” she said confidently.
In offering advice to young people, our Young Professional said, “I've been through a lot in my past but again nothing comes easy. Every road block or speed bump in your life prepares you to be a better you.”
She advised young people to further their education and not stop at just a high school diploma.
“Young adults, get or further your education. Life is becoming more difficult every day and education is super important. A high school diploma means nothing anymore. Get up and be ambitious. You are our future leaders. Yesterday has passed. Don't let it use up too much of today,” she warned.
She explained that being an optimist helps her to get through bad days. “It helps me to get through life. Always try to think positive and speak positive. Always remember to put God first in everything you do.”
Her favourite quote is one from Hollywood actor and activist Whoopi Goldberg – “If you want to be somebody, if you want to go somewhere, you better wake up and pay attention!”
