This Week We Feature Young Professional Allister D. Gumbs

Businessman Allister D. Gumbs
Following in his parents’ footsteps, Allister D. Gumbs has taken over the helm of his family businesses with the aim of taking them to a higher level.

Gumbs, the son of Keith Gumbs aka Stones and Camille Gumbs of Long Bush is now the manager of Stone’s Mobile Restaurant and Modern Development Business Services.

Stone’s Mobile Restaurant has become a household name and is a place of choice to eat in the Long Bush area. Once operated by his parents with his mom Camille at the wheel for more than 20 years, the young Gumbs has a mammoth task ahead but is confident that he can not only maintain but take the family-owned business to another height and making it even more recognized than it is already.

Modern Development Business Services formally Electrical Services, has been around for some 40 years and run by his father, again the young Gumbs is now at the helm of this business, which deals with both electrical installation services and construction.

The company has a great track record and has done several major works in the Territory with one of the most notables being the electrical work done on Geneva Place, the building that houses CCT Global Communication.

His passion lies in what he does and Gumbs is confident that he has the ability to juggle the businesses and take them a step ahead of similar businesses in their respective industries.

The former student of the Althea Scatliffe Primary and the Class of 2003 of the then BVI High School, now Elmore Stoutt High School said he always wanted to be his own boss.

“I wanted to be my own boss and make my own money which I feel I am very capable of doing. I also wanted to be a successful person out there,” said the young businessman.

The ambitious businessman continued: “I have a passion for everything I am doing right now. Especially on the electrical side, I am very passionate about it seeing I was involved in it for so long working with my dad and the knowledge and training that my dad has he instilled that in me. In terms of the food business I am excited about it and enjoy what I am doing, being able to provide excellent  food and service to the Long Bush community, wider Road Town and Tortola in general."

Apart from helping with his family businesses before taking them over officially last year, Gumbs who holds an Associate’s Degree in Computer Science from the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, first worked at the Water and Sewerage Department for about a year and then the Department for Disaster Management for about five months, both in administrative areas.

He then spent another year at Walkers BVI as a Corporate Administrator before taking up his full self-employment role in November 2009.

The young “Stones” as he is fondly called is aiming that in the next 10 years he will be able to develop the businesses into vibrant companies that will be recognized for their professional services, efficient customer service and high quality of work and most affordable prices.

“I would like to steer the businesses into that direction,” he remarked.

As for the more short term changes for the food van, which does not only provide daily lunches for many but is also a catering service, Gumbs said with the demand increasing he is hoping to open everyday of the week, instead of just Thursdays to Sundays.

Asked how he is able to manage the businesses and still have a social life, Gumbs said it is very difficult as most of the work steps up over the weekend.

Gumbs, who is also part of the management of the Diplomat Night Club, said he is able to run his businesses by prioritizing and proper time management and also with the help from his parents, siblings, and dedicated workers.

While it is yet still early to speak of successes, the optimistic businessman said, “in the beginning I am not going to see the fruits just as yet but as times goes by, with proper marketing and advertising and new strategies, people will just gravitate to it. Over time it will grow”.

His advice to young people is, “once you have a drive and initiative for doing something positive you should go for it. There will be obstacles but you will just have to overcome them and keep pushing on. Don’t give up because of obstacles or mistakes or if things not happening the way you would like it to be. Nothing in life comes easy so you must press on and with God on your side you will reap the benefits of success.”

While he has not been able to give as much service to his community as he would have liked as a young man from Long Bush, Gumbs is hoping that as his businesses take off and he is able to delegate responsibilities to staff, he will become more involved and give back to his community.

Mr. & Mrs. Stone have done a good job over the years. I really respect them & admire them. However, "young stones" needs to engage in customer service courses, as he is generally rude, disrespectful and unfriendly to the general public when serving at and on behalf of Stones.
