This Week We Feature Young Professional Allington O. Creque
Allington O. Creque of North Sound Virgin Gorda is more than the average young man. He is a windsurfer, well known to many as the Dread Racer, and may well be the only ‘dread-locked’ who windsurfs in this part of the world.
He is also a manager and aspiring businessman with his eyes set on setting up a sailing school that will employ and teach locals how to sail with the ultimate goal to eventually field a professional sailing team.
Mr. Creque, a former student of the now Robinson O’Neal Primary and then BVI High School, entered the field of work from age 18 and has ever since been involved in teaching sailing, having worked for various local companies in Virgin Gorda in the sailing industry.
His wide experience spans from his first job as a Water Sport Instructor at Bitter End Yacht Club, to Sandbox on Prickly Pear Island where he multitasked, to his current job at Oil Nut Bay where he holds the position of Beach Master and Head of Water Sports for the past year and a half.
With his strong passion for sailing and the water, Mr. Creque is working to set up his own business in that arena.
The sailor said he just loves the ocean and sailing, and coupled with growing up in Virgin Gorda, and surrounding himself with tourists and the water, it further motivated him to start his own business.
The Virgin Gordian has now embarked on laying the ground work for what will become the Gorda Sound Sailing School - a school that will provide opportunities for employment of locals and to teach locals the art of sailing and water sport.
“A lot of my people within my community don’t know how to sail and I am trying to give them an opportunity to do so,” the ardent sailing instructor explained the reason behind opening the school there.
Mr. Creque’s vision for his island is not limited as he hopes that with the establishment of such a school on Virgin Gorda, in the near future, he may be able to field a sailing team to represent the Virgin Islands at the Olympics.
“I am looking to train more sailors and people who can take the BVI to a further distance and we are known to be the sailing capital of the world. And people from all over come to do world class events, we have the best playground and gym which is the water of the BVI. If we can have a team to go to the next Olympic that is one of my goals,” Mr. Creque said, noting that he plans to have his school up and running in time for summer of 2012.
Mr. Creque said he also plans to involve locals in all aspect of his business, giving them an opportunity to become instructors, administrators and whatever field of work will be offered by his school.
His passion for sailing and helping people does not stop there, famously known as the Dread Racer, he is at the height of organising a windsurfing event called Dread Racer for Cancer, with the inaugural event set to take place from December 25, 2011 through January 1, 2012.
Mr. Creque said the event is being held to raise funds for cancer research and to also bring awareness of cancer to people in the Virgin Islands and around the world.
“It is an event I am doing for cancer awareness, and I am trying to help those in the BVI and around the world with information regarding all cancers, offering cancer awareness and cancer education. For example doing simple things such as covering food in microwave to avoid radiation,” the passionate cancer awareness advocate said.
The professional windsurfer who has participated in several events including the HIHO Windsurfing event in 2009 and placed second in the Men’s Division, said he is currently trying to set up his website for the event, which will be an information hub for the event and also on cancer awareness.
“It will be an annual event and as long as there is wind and people with cancer that is what Dread Racer is all about. We are not going to stop until there is a cure,” he charged.Allington said most of his supporters from the event are foreigners but he is also hoping to garner more local support for the event.
Another reason for choosing to run the event, Allington said is because he is fed up of seeing so many events being put on that are not being done for a worthy cause and it is his hope that Dread Racer for Cancer will not be seen as just an event but one that will help to make a difference in the lives of people with cancer or affected by cancer.
Allington will be on the Maury Show in September to speak about Dread Racer for Cancer which is expected to attract a host of international participants.
He describes himself as very athletic, very passionate, and very commitment to making a difference in people’s lives.
“I would love to see myself reach a point that I can be an inspiration to others or an example to others. Especially in my neighborhood in North Sound, a lot of young men are like kite ran out of string and there are others with great talent. I want to make a difference in their lives.”
His advice to young men is to “always stay focus, set a meaningful goal and one that is achievable. If it’s a challenge it will be great to the end. If things come easy it is not for you”.
Mr. Creque, the son of Ms. Lucille Malone of Tortola thanked her for being there for him and all that she has done to guide and support him.
He also had high praises for Darvin George who he said “is like a father to me”.
“He has been like everything to me and the reason why I am into what I am doing. He worked all his life and set a perfect example and even gave me the house I am living in. I am satisfied and thankful for all that he has done for me,” Allington said.
He also thanked all those who supported him over the years including the Sir Richard Branson and the Necker Island team, the Manager and staff of Bitter End, his boss David Johnson, the staff of Oil Nut Bay, Biras Creek and YCCS and all others who has played a role in his life and his initiative Dread Racer for Cancer Cause.
