This Week We Feature Young Professional Adrian E. McCoy
He is a Corporate Administrator at day and a bowler at night, who has been able to balance his work with professional play and yet being a role model father to a 14 year old daughter.
Adrian E. McCoy is a Corporate Administrator at Sable Trust Limited.
“I work for a registered agent in the financial services sector, reserving names, incorporating companies, company management, dealing with trust,” Adrian said.
Our young professional has been in Financial Services for some 12 years and has worked at various trust companies, including Trident Trust Company, ATU General Trust and Arias Fabrega & Fabrega.
The experience has taught him to be self sufficient and aggressive in completing whatever task is at hand.
Life’s twist
Financial Services is basically what he has known all of his work life, apart from doing summer jobs “packing bags at Riteway.”
“I didn’t see myself there at all. I just had the office skills because that is what I did in High School, typing, and it got me my foot in the door. And as I stayed in the industry I learned different things,” said Adrian, who attended the Althea Scatliffe Primary School and then BVI High School before finishing his secondary schooling at Jeremiah E. Burke High School in Boston.
“In school I always wanted to get into something that had to do with auto mechanics. It just never happened that way as yet. I like cars.”
Adrian is nevertheless proud to be working in Financial Services, one of the pillars of the Virgin Islands economy.
For him, a “thank You” from a satisfied client is worth all the while. “That’s it for the most part. A lot of the clients are overseas and time is critical. Sometimes they may be four hours ahead so the quicker you can pick up on what they want and get it done, that for me impresses them.”
Adrian also believes that every Virgin Islander should have a working knowledge of Financial Services and be proud about it. “It gives the VI a better marketability when you have locals that are certified practitioners. Because 10 years from now these big clients are not really going to be looking for big companies, they would just be looking for someone they can trust to do the job.”
Professional Bowler
We asked Adrian what he sees himself doing outside of financial services. “Bowling,” was Adrian’s automatic response.
“It’s a fun sport, sociable, and you can earn money at these tournaments and you can actually make a living from it. I can see myself outside of financial services bowling for a living,” Adrian firmly stated.
That being said, Adrian is an international bowler and plays locally at Save the Seed for his team “The Knights”. He has played in bowling tournaments in Las Vegas, Miami, Reno, Puerto Rico where he has won a tournament, and St. Croix.
“It is a sport that requires your mind and can be good to relax the mind off of any load. It is a sport that is 90% mental. You have to be focused to hit ten pins. You have to bring yourself to a sort of calm and focus on the lane and then see what the ball is doing.
“It is physical also as studies show that more than a hundred and twenty seven muscles are used to bowl. It can be taxing on the body as well. I tend to go to the gym to avoid injuries.”
Adrian is one of the few to have taken the sport of bowling very seriously and is looking to go to a few international tournaments this year.
As good as he is now, Adrian admits he was very horrible at the sport at the beginning. In fact, his first nickname while bowling at UP’s was ‘Gutter God’. “I was always throwing the ball in the gutter,” he said with a laugh.
Trust your journey
Adrian said he has been able to achieve great satisfaction in his endeavours because he trusts his journey. “That is the biggest thing for me. I stay true to exactly how I feel. I don’t go against myself. I deal with today today and tomorrow tomorrow and taking advantage of the opportunities that present themselves.”
Almost everyone has someone they look up to and for Adrian it is his big brother Clive McCoy, his late father Clarence McCoy and mother Yolanda McCoy, who he said is one of the hardest working women he knows.
He said his mother taught him and his siblings to be very diligent. “She has a method of ‘just get it out of the way so you wouldn’t have to do it again.’”
Apart from that, Adrian has a 14 year old daughter that he knows looks up to him and motivates him to be the best father he can be. “My daughter is one of my biggest motivators,” Adrian said, noting that he got her when he was young but has stuck to his responsibilities.
Advise to youth
Adrian advises youth to not waste their effort on spoils, but to do everything with a purpose. “Make it purpose driven,” Adrian advises.
