‘This is for you mommy’ - Jamieson Hopkins
Last night was a night at Delta Petroleum's Pasea gas station that everyone present had no choice in declaring the event "the hub of true family values and big winnings". It was the venue for the drawing of Rotary Club of Road Town's/Delta Petroleum/LIME/Nagico massive raffle drawing of the grand prize of a 2015 model Nissan XTrail.
From the time Hopkins arrived at the venue of the drawing he declared and claimed the car as he walked up to the Delta booth where the last set of ticket sales was taking place.
He purchased two tickets and insisted that he was going to be the big winner. "That car is mine and when I win it I giving it a first wash down right there," said the young man as he headed to the table for a drink.
This was approximately 30 - 45 minutes before the actual drawing. While the crowd grew thicker and the clock ticked counting down to the magical moment, Jamie as he is popularly known, was the spectacle of the night as he took over the place dancing to the selected sounds of Craig A. Lake aka DJ Push Pop, all the time insisting that he will win.
At about two minutes before the drawing standing between two of the Gasoline pumps he said, "You know what? I don't want that, that car... I don't want it, I love my truck. You know what? When I win that I giving that to my queen, my mudda (mother) yes serious... that's my gift to her. I giving that to my mother; she deserves it. She worth more but I would give it to her," he said as if he had a vision.
Then the moment of drawing finally came and the sponsors decided that before the main draw they were going to do two complimentary giveaways, one of a one year supply of cooking gas which was won by one Marcia Fonseca; the other was for a one year supply of Diesel fuel won by Jera Cameron who was on the spot to claim her winnings. Asked if she had any use for the fuel she responded "no".
On to the moment of the night when Hopkins’ name was pulled. The validators called out the number of the ticket pulled by a little girl, 1462. That moment Hopkins was seen walking off tossing his ticket to the ground saying, "that car is mine, give me my car, I told yall, give me my car." It was not until he turned and picked up his ticket and lifted over his head and said, "That's mine for real, that's my number, call my mother, call my mother now, that's her Christmas gift from me," that the validators realized that he actually won the car indeed.
First time winning anything
When Hopkins called his mother twice from his mobile phone, she did not respond. It was after he was allowed a call from a person present that she responded. He took the phone and told her of the winning.
"Hey mommy, mommy come down here by Delta, I just win a jeep and I gon give it to you… Merry Christmas, come here… everybody here waiting on you, I love you so much, hurry and come...It's your Christmas gift from me to you… come now mommy Merry Christmas,” he said. It took the owner of the phone to convince the mother that her son was not joking which is when she got out of her bed at her Baugher's Bay home and in the company of some nieces headed to Delta Petroleum where she was greeted with the sweetest kisses from her son as he dropped the keys in her hands.
"I know he does be joking a lot that's why I didn't take his calls, he like that," she said. The mother was overwhelmed by the gesture of her son. She said it was the second winning gift for her yesterday, the first being a television set from an unrelated promotion.
"She won a TV today and I asked her for it and she told me it was the first thing she ever won. She didn't know bigger things were coming from her son," added Hopkins.
Family values
General Manager of Delta Petroleum Mr Bevis A. Sylvester, moved with emotion like many others noted and underscored the significance of family values.
"This shows real love, it shows that real love still exists. It shows that the real meaning of Christmas is still alive in the BVI. This is really touching and it's an example for others to follow showing the strong family values, something that we have lost to a great extent and need to bring back," said Mr Sylvester.
On the other hand President of Rotary Club of Road Town Mr Shan Mohamed was no less in awe of the young man’s show of deep love for his mother. He said that family is one of the strong points of Rotary. He said too that the promotion was a two-fold one as it allowed the club to raise funds for projects to better the lives of many and at the same time put a valuable gift in the hands of the lucky winner. “He really moved me by what he did, that was really touching," said Mohamed.
The car was handed over with full insurance coverage by Nagico Insurances and one year supply of fuel compliments of Delta Petroleum.

Sh.n have j..gy stringing along every where like a puppet
Why say something that is non beneficial? We need to start focusing on the issues that are important to the BVI so that we can continue to enjoy a decent standard of living now and tomorrow for our children sake. Divided, we shall all fail.
