There are delinquent mothers too- Radio caller
This controversial issue of child support was again a topic of discussion on Speak Out BVI on ZBVI 780 AM. The show was hosted by Mr Doug Wheatley on Tuesday May 30, 2017.
Not just the fathers
But while fathers took the brunt of the blows in the discussions mothers did not escape criticism as, according to a caller, some mothers are also guilty of not properly taking care of their children while placing all the blame on the fathers.
A frustrated caller remarked, “Is not just the fathers that are not paying child support, it has mothers out there too. They are the ones pushing the envelope and not all fathers out there just refusing to not take care of their child.”
Money to buy boat but none for children?
Meanwhile, delinquent fathers were criticised for spending large amount of monies on boats and cars while their children are given nothing or next to nothing.
Another caller commented, “For those fathers who cannot support their children and have to be imprisoned, the matter is very simple; how come they find money, say up to a $100,000 to buy a boat and maybe another $100,000 to buy a motor car or to maintain an apartment separate apart from their whole family and yet they cannot find a few dollars to support their children and that fee, the general public now have to support the family? What about that?”
Some changes in policy
Host of the show Mr Wheatley remarked that there have been some changes in the policy regarding dealing with delinquent fathers, including on the matter of imprisonment. He said this came about after the matter was brought up in the public, including on his show.
“On more than one occasions I talked about it here on the radio. There are many families that talk to me about it and some of them came with tears in their eyes talking about their situation and so forth and I try my best here on the radio to talk about it,” stated Mr Wheatley.
Gratitude was expressed to Sixth District Representative Hon Alvera Maduro-Caines who has spoken up against the imprisonment of delinquent fathers and the other members of the House of Assembly who participated in trying to rectify the situation through the passing of the Child Maintenance and Access Act 2016, which was passed in the House of Assembly in March 2017.

Bout time...
come on ladies ... don't fall flat for this topic !!!!!
What about a child not living with the mother and live with else one and the mom not contributing the money that the father paid for the child and whenever that child sees the father she/he need lunch money, books, money food?
With the child support system if the father cant get to see the child then the father don't need to pay no money, if the child not living with the mother/father but live else one then no money should be paying to the child mother/father.
Money alone cant raise a child each, child need a mother and father figure and need to be with both parents half and half.
