ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- For the Virgin Islands (VI) community, the issue of delinquent fathers being imprisoned for not paying child support is nothing new. However, the spotlight was also thrown on some mothers who also fail to adequately support their children while mounting pressure on the father/s.

This controversial issue of child support was again a topic of discussion on Speak Out BVI on ZBVI 780 AM. The show was hosted by Mr Doug Wheatley on Tuesday May 30, 2017.

Not just the fathers

But while fathers took the brunt of the blows in the discussions mothers did not escape criticism as, according to a caller, some mothers are also guilty of not properly taking care of their children while placing all the blame on the fathers.

A frustrated caller remarked, “Is not just the fathers that are not paying child support, it has mothers out there too. They are the ones pushing the envelope and not all fathers out there just refusing to not take care of their child.”

Money to buy boat but none for children?

Meanwhile, delinquent fathers were criticised for spending large amount of monies on boats and cars while their children are given nothing or next to nothing.

Another caller commented, “For those fathers who cannot support their children and have to be imprisoned, the matter is very simple; how come they find money, say up to a $100,000 to buy a boat and maybe another $100,000 to buy a motor car or to maintain an apartment separate apart from their whole family and yet they cannot find a few dollars to support their children and that fee, the general public now have to support the family? What about that?”

Some changes in policy

Host of the show Mr Wheatley remarked that there have been some changes in the policy regarding dealing with delinquent fathers, including on the matter of imprisonment. He said this came about after the matter was brought up in the public, including on his show.

“On more than one occasions I talked about it here on the radio. There are many families that talk to me about it and some of them came with tears in their eyes talking about their situation and so forth and I try my best here on the radio to talk about it,” stated Mr Wheatley.

Gratitude was expressed to Sixth District Representative Hon Alvera Maduro-Caines who has spoken up against the imprisonment of delinquent fathers and the other members of the House of Assembly who participated in trying to rectify the situation through the passing of the Child Maintenance and Access Act 2016, which was passed in the House of Assembly in March 2017.

Some mother's taken advantage of their child/children's father money to not mainly positively support their child with needed thigs but to keep up the standards thats been set in this new era about keeping themselves or children (on fleek). This new era of is mainly about fashion not about putting food or education into their child or children. Then again most of the months who are doing so are girls who got pregnant after a Jam at 16-25 of age so what do we expect from grown small mined people.

There are a lot more delinquent mothers in this society than ppl want to admit, but they put out a good show for ppl who don't kno. the younger females who have kids at a young age, themselves lack the proper guidance form their own mothers who should have been teaching them self respect and saving yourselves. So if the Adult mothers are no guidance for the teen and young mothers then you cant really expect for them to have any proper values to pass down to their kids. Glad this is being spoken on

I think a man should purchase items for his child also socialize with his child; share life experiences and groom his child for manhood: a child become a product of his enveroment : I am not the worlds best father but I make sure all off of boys and girls are taken off(all off the well pass 18)..our history will recall the men of the BVI villages were the bread winners while the women stayed at home and nurture our offspring(but these are modern times so I think both man & woman have a direct responsibility to see about the youth) don't make a child if your are not financially secure

There is a lot of mothers here in the BVI who gives a rat's A&& about their children. I know for a fact about one who lives in my neighborhood. Her child plays with my child and the poor little girl is always hungry and dirty. I also know for a fact that the little girl father supports the child. When the mother get the support money, the mother goes out and do her nails and do her raggerdy weave. When she buy food it is those salt laced cup of soups and kool ade. Sometimes I want to grab that mother by the scruff of her neck and go buck wild on her with blows.

I notice a few dislikes on my previous comments, what you should understand is delinquency is: not payin attention to your children's well being, not caring about their nutrition, not checking their homeworks and making sure they don't carry "contraband" to school, delinquency is not knowing who ur childrens friends are and the company they are keeping, not asking them where they are going, allowing them to walk in and out of your house like they grown, delinquency is allowing your kids to have social media's and not monitorin what they are doing, you don't even kno what information they have put out and if the info is tru, delinquency is givin ur child the latest cell phone and not knowing who she speaks to, texts, and so forth leavin her exposed to these grown a** perverts, it is not spending quality time, talking to ur children about their daily lives, lookin for signs of any negativity in their life and playin at active roll in ensuring that your child is mentally and emotionally stable and happy. it is not about throwin some brand name on ur child and stuffin some money in their hand to buy food and calling urself a good parent. its about RAISING your children, with values, with respect for others, with manners...I kno some ppl will take it the wrong way, but how do u have a daughter in high school, but u wuddnt kno it if u saw them at an event dress to a T like she 30, and u standing right beside her the same. Mothers esp are instilling the wrong values in children to be materialistic and shallow with no respect and a feeling of entitlement. so the work DELINQUENCY, it is about much much more.

what about fathers who paying their child support every month and the mother refused to give the father the child every other week because they don't want that child to be around the father wife??

What about a child not living with the mother and live with else one and the mom not contributing the money that the father paid for the child and whenever that child sees the father she/he need lunch money, books, money food?

With the child support system if the father cant get to see the child then the father don't need to pay no money, if the child not living with the mother/father but live else one then no money should be paying to the child mother/father.

Money alone cant raise a child each, child need a mother and father figure and need to be with both parents half and half.
