FISH BAY, Tortola, VI- Leader of the National Democratic Party (NDP) Hon Marlon A. Penn (R8) has said the factors which caused division among members of his party and the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM) cannot be the same factors to unite them, as discussions are underway to merge the two opposition parties ahead of the next general election.

Speaking with Cathy O. Richards on the Big Story on JTV Channel 55 on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, Hon Penn revealed that he and PVIM leader Hon Ronnie W. Skelton (AL) are in discussions to make a merger a reality.

“We believe we have to merge organisations, it’s not about individuals,” he said. “We have to respect the many persons, the thousands of persons that vote for both organisations for the last two elections and we have to ensure that we bring together the team in a way that is truly an alliance.”

Hon Penn also said the merger is close to being finalised and will be announced soon.

Asked what this merger will look like, Hon Penn said, “We need to come as one entity moving forward, and I think that’s where we’re heading…the focus is to have one entity moving forward into the next general elections.”

It should be noted that the PVIM is a splinter of the NDP.

I wasn’t involved in Alliance- Hon Penn

Opposition members Hon Myron V. Walwyn (R6), Hon Melvin M. Turnbull (R2) and Hon Stacy R. Mather (AL) announced the formation of a political Alliance on January 30, 2025, as they aim to work closer with each other.

In speaking with Ms Richards, Hon Penn disclosed he was not involved in the formation of this Alliance.

“I’m being truthful and honest to the people of the Virgin Islands. I wasn’t involved in it and I learned about it after it was announced…I know that discussions were being had and our understanding was that discussion was to bring the organisations together, and that was my position and that was Hon Skelton’s position from the beginning,” he said.

What divides us cannot unite us- Hon Penn

Hon Penn said bringing the organisations together is the only way forward as politicians are transient.

“We go and come…and soon will be off the scene when the people have had enough of us…We live in a democracy and we have to ensure we have two proper entities at least to make sure there are checks and balances in any democracy, and the minute you have these levels of splinters and fractures it creates a difficulty for the country moving forward and the same behaviour that separated us can’t fix us,” he said.

Hon Penn also said he has not ruled out Hons Walwyn, Turnbull and Mather from the new entity.

“The one member from my side, [Hon Walwyn], has not resigned or anything like that, so I assume we’re on the same page in terms of wanting to form an entity,” he added.

Hon Penn explained that to stand a chance against the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) they must come together as one entity versus multiple entities, as it does not make “plausible sense”.

“I hope calmer heads prevail when the process is crystallised,” he said.

can this group coalesce around 1 leader ? there are to many strong personalities and NO ONE wants to make the sacrifice for the greater good.Too much pride and preceived saving face. And dont count Hon. Smith out of the mix she still has leverage.

There are too many small parties that are weak. Agree with the Opposition moves here. A single opposition party would be better. Not that I get a vote! Best of luck Belongers.

And the plot of thickens! This scenario is calling for someone to give way in order for one party to be formed. Who will be man enough to do that? Two congo ell cannot live in the same hole!

Happy to hear this, but the only way forward is to have a convention and for everyone to respect that dissision. To my recollection, Rhonni and Marlon did not get to be leaders of their party through a convention.

Boss you weak! You have not had any NDP internal elections since around 2019! RS is the same with PVIM. Since the 3 gentlemen were trying to get YOU and RS to meet and discuss a way forward, both of you just shrugged them off all the while Fraser and Lorna jumping like frogs.

Now all of a sudden YOU and RS have discovered this needs to happen before the next election. GTFOH! Both of you guys a long-termers who have gotten soft and relaxed collecting paychecks for little work. Since the COI took away your freebies, less of the people’s work is coming from both of you. So cry me a river now you both rushing to hold two failing parties together. Too little, too late! Marlon and Ronnie credibilities are SHOT!

Both have failed to LEAD and now must move out the way! You guys had your chances and need to realize the boat has sailed!

Togetherness with people and things that are right is far better than Togetherness with all those wrong.
In my opinion I truly believe that opposition
leader Hon., Ronnie Skelton and NDP Party leaders desire needful merger of the PVIM and the NDP. In my second opinion I believe Hon. Myron Walwyn don't because he is craving to become the B.V.I next Premier for more than three (3) reasons, one (1) being his problems with the CoI.
There is no credible reason why he and the other two opposition ministers formed an alliance opposition party against the opposition lead by Hon. Ronnie Skelton.
The B.V.I political opposition leaders, Hon. Ronnie Skelton, is a highly qualified business owner, probably the top local.
It is clear that base on Hon. Ronnie Skelton past and present ventures of financial management, even though he is not the close to our best political ear-catching speaker, his money managing skills and execution is needed to help reverse millions of wasted on which full outcome: such as 1. the empty apartment house at Jose Hill, 2. the Market Square unfinished booths:, only a few in use, 3. Millions of dollars spent on wasteful Music Fest, etc.

The truth is hard for some people to accept, but not lies.
Vote your conscience, or don't vote

@ Native Senior: you’re not cognitive today. You need to knit, play bingo and realize your thinking is outdated. It’s important to know when you have a senior moment.

Anytime they put the Alliance leader in charge they will get the same result at the polls like 2019. He is loveable but not as Premier. Who don't hear will feel.
