Tempo Racing wins Leverick Bay Poker Run 2013
The prize money was collected by the leader of the team who give his name as 'Tatoo'. He said Tempo Racing entered the competition for the fun and was not that focussed on winning. “We entered for the fun, we are glad to win but it was not as if we were expecting that or more focus on that. We just came for the fun of it,” Tatoo told Virgin Islands News Online.
Pamper Pirate, led by Mr Elton George got the 2nd place prize of $5,000, 3rd prize was won by Renegade, which was captained by Kalid Douglas and the 4th place prize of $1,000 was pocketed by Festus Pemberton with the boat Red Hot. Simply the Best copped the prize for the best dressed team.
The event on Sunday May 26, 2013 attracted a never before seen extensively large crowd and boats of all sizes, shapes and power, which were key to the success of the sport this year. “Poker Run rating bigger than carnival now you see,” said a patron. From the very break of day almost all the Marinas and the Virgin Gorda Ferry dock were a flurry of activities as hundreds were getting themselves poised to ensure that they were on a boat or the Speedy's Ferry in order to be in the height of the Poker run.
Owner of Leverick Bay Resort and Marina and promoter of the Poker Run, Monica Willis said the committee was overwhelmed by the support this year having seen in excess of 300 boats. “This is the best year we’ve ever had, its amazing and without all these people it would not exist. This has been the best ever year, each year it just gets stronger and stronger it’s just amazing,” said an emotional Willis.
She said the key ingredient this year was no doubt the people who attended and the commitment of the committee who stuck together to make it happen this year.
The registration process did get started at the scheduled time of 7 A.M. and the Poker Run was off at 11:30 A.M. The cue to get the engines going over the turquoise water of the Virgin Islands was given by the two helicopters, which provided its own pump of excitement to the event.
The high speed rides saw the likes of Tortola's 'Hymee' and his team on board ‘Puss Run’ with double high powered engines. Hymee said, “She aint running right now. When I get she going and fixed well then it’s a no contest something. Today is an ordinary cruise.” To say as much, then when ‘Puss Run’ is in her full gear it'll definitely be a no contest and in a class of its own. Puss Run was among the top five boats on the water yesterday.
Others included Red Hot, which was not as hot in speed as they were in showand Simply the best, which won the prize for the best dressed crew. They had one of the single largest crew of adults and children alike. There were also the likes of sovereign Guana Island- the boat with a trailer load of hot girls, Montyray with some cool sporty dogs as part of the crew, Power play, Donzi, Addiction, Big Pimpin, and Renegade just to name a few.
Having taken off from Leverick Bay, the run led to its first stop at Scrub Island where the second hand was pulled, then on to Norman Island, which was the lunch and party stop. The next stop was at Village Cay on Tortola then to Virgin Gorda and then back to Leverick Bay.
This year the organisers did excellent in securing the sum of $9000 to be shared by two charities. $8,000 of the proceeds from the Leverick Bay Poker Run 2013 will go to the Virgin Gorda Diabetes Association while $1000 will go towards the painting of the seniors home on Virgin Gorda.
