TADDY BAY, Virgin Gorda, VI - Virgin Islands (VI) Premier and Minister for Finance Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) said he became emotional when he saw the first airplane land at the Taddy Bay Airport, signaling the rebirth of the facility.

The ceremony to mark the milestone event was held on the airport’s compound this morning Tuesday, November 22, 2021 on Virgin Gorda.

Airport reopening significant for sister islands - Premier

“Today, tears came in my eyes when I saw the plane landed because I know this one was God alone. Today is such a glorious day in the Virgin Islands. It is with great joy that we are here,” Premier Fahie said during his emotional speech.

He explained that the reopening was important for the sister island and the rest of the territory.

“What has been created is more opportunity for the people of Virgin Gorda, more jobs for the people of Virgin Gorda, more money in your pocket to be able to feed your family. People coming from Anguilla, St. Martin, Puerto Rico wherever and landing.”

The territory’s leader said already there is a booking for a commercial flight.

“The first flight is a commercial flight is already scheduled I think for the 17th of December, unless they changed the date, I think it's Cape Air, landing here with passengers and many more flights to come from many more airlines,” Hon Fahie said.

He added, “Why have we done this? it is not for the show and don’t let anyone fool you. I like my ceremonies because when they criticize you, you hear a lot of laughter, when they criticized the government you hear laughter, so if they are going to take care of the laughter we are going to publicize the joy of God."

"It’s not about picture taking, but about being purpose-driven and those who work with me know when you tell me you can’t, only then we pushing ahead,” Hon Fahie said.

Gov't Minister commend move

Meanwhile, several other ministers also commended the undertaking such as Minister for Transportation, Works and Utilities Hon Kye M. Rymer (R4), Junior Minister for Trade and Economic Development, Hon Shereen D. Flax-CharlesHon Shereen D. Flax-Charles (AL), and Minister for Natural Resources, Labour and Immigration Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9).

“This reopening here is an incredible deal because it means a lot to the island of Virgin Gorda,” Hon Wheatley said.

He added, “Persons who have medical issues who would have to go to Tortola, imagine three minutes to half an hour on a boat, so this could possibly save a life! Or if you have to go to St. Thomas, or it’s about half an hour to Puerto Rico. That is significant. So not only are we going to get tourists in, but persons can travel for medical reasons you too would have another option.”

To mark the occasion, there were performances from the Bregado Flax Educational Center among others, in addition to a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Let's be honest, this airport opens and closes, opens and closes, opens and closes. Now it's open. Just like the bank is.

@ james, I was saying the same thing to myself, it keeps closing and opening and every time a ceremony. We have to take care and maintain what we have. That way we can use the money for other needful stuff.

Let us be positive and wish the Territory all the best in the future. This is our country and the airport is for all of us. Not for the V.I.P. or the N.D.P. It is the government's airport built for the people. If the country fails ALL of us will experience the difficulties. Here we have a Premier who is trying his best to ensure that the Territory keep afloat and we have people wishing doom. I was disappointed that I didn't see the leader of the Opposition or Hon. Mitch Turnbull at the ceremony. Maybe they were ashamed because they always ask where the money coming from. It was a job well done to ensure that tourists and residents get easy to and from the Virgin Gorda. I know that once God is in the vessel we can smile at any storm. He will see us through any difficult situation.

When I saw the plane land, not when I saw the plane landed..English language is really on the decline here, even from so called leaders. And when you point out the bad English you get ridiculed as being petty.

@??? If you are going to correct someone's grammar you should at least proofread what you type. The use of the
conjunction "and" to start a sentence is grammatically incorrect.

Let us be real with ourselves. We need to creep before we can walk. How many of us are willing to make a contribution toward the development of the Territory. We have B.F.EC repaired for our children's education. The Administration buildings in The Valley repaired and North Sound Post Office on Virgin Gorda repaired without the United Kingdom loan guarantee. We do not have to surrender our Financial Services revenue to the U.K.

The prescription of the U.K loan guarantee is a recipe for economic disaster. It will result in layoff of Public Servants and closure of many business as well as criminal activities. If we want to see all the amenities and services provide for the Territory then we will have to get a larger budget that will result in higher taxation. The B.V.I is not to be compared with the U.S.V.I because the Federal Government of the United States contribution to that Territory is tremendous. Time will tell.

At Dancing in the sunshine: As sad as it might be to lay off public servants, recall that a previous administration paid for an en expensive review of government operations some years ago. The final report was, of course, never released, but if memory serves, the executive summary stated something along the lines that there was 30% excess staff to complete the desired government functions. That would apply regardless of independence. Those chickens will come home to roost eventually, and we will have to eventually choose between higher taxation and keeping them on the payroll. Tourists already pay arrival tax, departure tax, environmental tax, security fees, cruising tax. They also pay for import duties (factored into everything they buy here).

That said, indeed, the question is whether the BVIs can sustain itself financially should it go independent. I say that's a dubious proposition based on the generally poor performance of govt over the years (hospital, Pier Park, airline, Prospect Reef) as well as all the bulk drug running. We also have a dysfunctional system inasmuch as many BVI employers collect payroll and social security taxes and don't forward them.
