Team Unity launches Vernon A. Connor against PM Douglas in St. Kitts
With three political parties known as Team Unity and headed by former Minister Dr. The Honourable Timothy S. Harris coming together to challenge the 20 year rule of the Douglas Labour Party Administration, a new candidate has been launched to try and unseat PM Douglas who represented Constituency #6 since 1989.
New man on the Block Vernon A. Connor
Well known Educator and political freshman Mr. Vernon A. Connor was launched on Thursday January 22, 2015 in front of what is being described as the largest non-Labour Party Political meeting in the history of Constituency #6.
Constituency #6 which is a Denzil L. Douglas stronghold and consists of the areas of Newton Ground, St. Pauls, Dieppe Bay, Parsons, Saddlers and Harris saw the charismatic educator who impressed all with a message of Hope, Community Pride and UNITY making a serious attempt to unseat the 62 year old Prime Minister. The born and bred Constituency#6 lifelong resident called on his fellow constituents to be proud of the constituency they live in and vote there and do not allow anyone to influence them to partake in “Criminal activity.”
Connor encouraged his fellow constituents to vote at home and be proud of their constituency and not be known as illegal people voting where they do not live. He implored that the level of debate should be elevated. The massive audience was overwhelmingly receptive to Connor’s call.
The support shown for Mr. Connor’s candidacy on Thursday evening continues to indicate the groundswell of support for and the embracing of the creed and policies of Team Unity and it’s Prosperity Agenda. An agenda which includes the removal of VAT from Food, Medicine, Educational Supplies and Funeral Expenses according to team Unity leader Dr. Harris, speaking exclusively to our newsroom. In addition, the agenda includes the removal of pre-school fees as well as reduced low income house mortgages and student loan payments.
A rocky road for Democracy in St Kitts & Nevis
It has been a rocky five-year road for the Dr Douglas Labour Party Administration who lost two of its strong-men in January 2013.
Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Sam Condor resigned his Ministerial post as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration, Homeland Security and Labour.
Condor, an elected parliamentarian for Constituency #3 since 1989, demitted office via a letter to Prime Minister Hon Dr Denzil Douglas.
In addition PM Douglas revoked the appointment of the Honourable Timothy S. Harris as a Minister of Government and assumed responsibility for the portfolio of Constituency Empowerment that was previously held by Harris.
Harris comes to the VI
During a visit to the Virgin Islands in December 2014, Dr Harris emphasised on the efforts and will of many in the twin-island state to get rid of Douglas. “Dr Douglas has been using every device, every trick, foul and otherwise to ensure that he stays in office against the will of the people of the region,” Dr Harris said, calling what is taking place in St Kitts and Nevis an injustice.
Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition in St Kitts and Nevis Hon Mark Brantley two years ago filed a motion of no confidence against the Douglas Administration but to date it has not been brought before the country’s legislative assembly to be debated. Recently the Parliament was dissolved without it being brought for debate however the Court still has the matter on its agenda to see if rights were violated as many believed there are still public policy questions to be answered.
