WICKHAM'S CAY I, Tortola, VI– Taxi drivers speaking to Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) have cried foul over what was referred to as unfair practices at the taxi queue of the Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park, which they claimed is leaving some drivers at a disadvantage and losing revenues while others thrive.

One long-time driver, speaking to our news centre on condition of anonymity on behalf of other drivers, complained that persons who are ‘connected’ are taking advantage of the line system to hijack the queue.

Line system 'hijacked'

“One of the things happening, we have a line system out there… there’s a particulate guy, he has a set of buses, and what he is doing, he double dipping,” the taxi driver complained.

The driver detailed that these connected persons are not adhering to the line system, have multiple vehicles, and even employ persons to hold a space in the line when they are out for work.

He said as a result, drivers are losing revenue as complaints have already been made to no avail.

“If you get a turn, you should represent your turn… something isn’t right, some money or something passing under the table, I can’t directly say, but something isn’t right,” they said.

The driver related that the system has about 20-30 persons cutting the system with the TPP security and management allegedly turning a blind eye. It is also being reported that those who speak out against the system are being targeted.

It is unclear how exactly anyone is being targeted.

Drivers want 'fair' system - Taxi Driver

VINO reached out to Cyril B. Romney Pier Park officials this morning, November 14, 2023, and was told that the matter would be one for the Park’s Customer Service Personnel, who were both unavailable at the time.

The marketing staff added; however, that some taxi agents are given priority.

Meanwhile, the taxi driver, speaking on behalf of those affected, added that by bringing the issues to the media, there is a hope that investigations will be made to ensure the correct system is being adhered to.

The driver detailed, “We want to see fairness, and everyone can represent themselves… if you don’t represent yourself, you don’t have a turn.”

VG has a similar issue and Hon. V Wheatley and former representative S. Flax-Charles were well aware of. The folks that own the ferry companies were tagging all the tourists for taxi service when they bought their tickets in Tortola. This resulted in the other taxi drivers in VG being cut out of the equation.
    • @Kim. Thats a serious one.. (14/11/2023, 13:46) Like (14) Dislike (2) Reply
What's going on in VG. Is soliciting by the ferry. The people pay the Boat to go VG. Let the people jump off and chose a Taxi of their choice. That need serious and urgent attention. One set a people can't go home with a set of money every day...Now as for Tortola, Change is the problem. The taxi drivers are so a custom of doing what they want now changes and enforcement are happening. They can't and don't want to deal with it...We Need changes and fairness for the betterment of all on both Tortola and Virgin Gorda..

The Taxi and Livery Commission as well as BVI PA are well aware of the situation. The representatives can only Lobby and make representation on behalf of the constituents to all responsible agencies. What would you do if you owned a ferry company as well as a taxi and tour company and someone comes to your ferry counter and buys a ticket to VG and they ask how can they get to the Baths? Well you can book and prepay for that right here at the ferry counter! Sense alone

All of our past political leaders, and them present have promised the they would work for their best interest. This is a promise yet to be fulfilled for approximately the pas 70 years. However oi was partly done better, but not best as promised.

    GREEDY MINDSET.

The majority of taxi drivers by nature are greedy, but among them are some that are extremely greedy. Taxi drivers have not the discipline of mind to regulate a fair system of tourist sharing at Cyril Romney Cruise Ship Port. Our government is charged with the tasks to regulate a fair, and hopefully satisfying system to satisfy the need of all taxi drivers that do business at the Cruise Ship Pier, but is our political leaders willing to take on this needful challenge, only one of many that has stunned our Spiritual, physical, and mental wellbeing of the people of the BVI, and those that visit the BVI year to year?

Dont we have an all powerful livery commission to address matters such as this? Or are they maybe the root cause of this very corruption? Hahah I love BVI.

Yes, for a regulated service, taxis and the livery commission have a lot to answer for. Between the crazy prices and ramshackle vehicles something needs to be done!

Licence Uber and improve public transport.

This is nothing new, the people in position are a set of buy-outs, no conscience, no moral; all sold to the highest bidder.

The more they get the more they want, their lives will conclude with a shitty end despite all the money they unfairly accumulate, KMFT.

What that driver said is the perfect truth but there would be those who will want to oppose him. Mr. Minister taking care of his district all the others have to take care of theirs. In three and a half years they will come crying for your vote. Mr. Minster is hand and glove with all that's happening he is fully responsible for this mess and he knows it. Meeting are being called and the drivers cry have been falling on deaf ears. Ports authority need to open their eyes and ears and listen to drivers cry. Manager in marine need to step aside because something is obviously wrong. To much crookedness going on they for who they want certainly fairness in not happening. To many people are hurting from this mess. Obviously ports can't police them selves. Some thing is definitely wrong. ports, TPP and the minister responsible for this subject matter needs to come together to address these vexing issues to much crooks in the system.

What is sad is that there are people in the lines who do not even come to the ship and are at their regular jobs and are hindering the man or woman who are out of their beds from 4 or 5 o'clock and prepared them self for work and they spend all day in the heat, rain and due trying to get a job and can't take home 5 dollars to buy a bread for their family. You think that is right? There are people who cant even drive a safari and they in the big line some can't even drive a van what a cross.

What is even worse drivers and busses are booked up for pre booked tours with tour operators racing to go and come back to disrupt the independent line. Changing drivers and swapping busses to say they running in this one or that one space. Look sharp the license plates will be swapping also. A set of crooks and gate man know the crookedness port knows the crookedness and the minister knows the crookedness stop pretending you don't know. Infact we don't know who is on who payroll so that is why so much crookedness going on. Wickedness never cease. Husband driving for wife, wife driving for husband. Man and woman who can't even see, sick can't walk or talk have a turn on the line taxi ID in question have a turn in the line. Seems like the dead even have a turn in the line all of you who facilitating this kind of injustice you all are a big failure to the system. Payroll is what is speaking in this mess you all created it start from the head. How do you feel when you rest your head? If you feel good you have no concise.

The man wa have all those buses up lower estate and the customs man with the 3 sons running competition to see who could buy the most safari buses and one of the sons was given a taxi license at 18 years old all done by the minister crooked backside. Both the customs man and house driving for old taxi drivers who already retired and even have valid trade licenses or taxi id's it also have taxi drivers who don't even have buses but ports allow them to be on the list don't believe me ask the red man from Frenchman Cay and also some of Port security staff at the gate accepting bribes dirty SOBs. Let's see if the new ports director got the balls to fix these nasty situations.

Everybody has to eat so everyone should have the opportunity to make a living. A cadre of people, if true, should not be getting the lion share of the work. The process should be an easy, ie, first in , first out. You depart on your trip and upon return you get at back of line. Got a few questions?

How many licensed taxi drivers/operators in the BVI? How many operate at the Pier Park? Are there too many at the Pier ParK for profitably? Should there a limit on the number of taxi drivers in the BVI? Does the tour operator have a vertical operation, ie, they control and coordinate the tourist ships, ground transportation, marine transportation, tours, entertainment, lunch, etc?

@tola what you call greedy a man trying to make a honest living on a seasonal business that is being abuse by a few with selfish behavior port security manager has created a problem that has affected drivers for obvious reasons he has a 9-5 job 12 months and taxi operators have 7 months out of the year to earn a living. The situation at the port is the mess created by security with it's unfair bias practices it's okay for some and unacceptable for others. This needs to stop. So you that's blogging can say anything cause you have a steady pay check coming.
  • are the taxi drivers fair? (15/11/2023, 08:09) Like (1) Dislike (5) Reply
Do the taxi drivers take turns where they drop passengers? Do they alternate which businesses they bring them? Or do they only bring them one spot where they are getting bribed with food and drink and money? Do they bring the passengers to legitimate known legal nice businesses or do they drop and lead them to dumpy rude illegal vendors on the beach where they get bribed to do so? Do they even care about the customers experience? Or are they just greedy? Fair is Fair. Be fair to the businesses taxi drivers. Think about it. Businesses are now being told by taxi drivers that they want food, drink, & money to bring guests. Bribery. Unfair. We need better taxi drivers who are fair!

What about the outrages prices people are charged. What about the constant illegal parking and picking up passengers on rounderboats etc. Some sever road hazzards the tazi cause. Especially around the ferry dock. They have a car park but want to double park to pick up passengers. Fix this and the roads.

Taxi drivers need to start showing respect for other drivers and road users. They are competing with the pot holes for being the bigger nuisance on the roads.

The taxi driver situation is a cartel. The whole world is using Uber and Lyft and we're stuck paying insane amounts for journeys. The World does not owe these taxi-drivers a living - it is a low-skilled job in a time of self-driving vehicles. They do not buy a "medallion" for the right to ply their trade and the children on the street say they do not pay in for NHI nor Social Security. They occupy large numbers of parking spaces but do not pay for the privilege. They are not obliged to work anti-social hours, nor to take a ride to a destination if they do not want to. Many a visitor has complained to me about their unfriendly attitude and beat-up old trucks.

In short, the taxi industry benefits no-one except the drivers themselves. They do not serve this community, they only serve themselves. Root and branch reform of this sector is long overdue.
