‘Take the money & vote them out’ – Elvis ‘Juggy’ Harrigan
Harrigan was the feature speaker at last night’s meeting held at the Beach Club Terrace parking lot in Baughers Bay, Tortola.
Further, he urged that when the National Democratic Party comes with 11th hour projects and handouts, that they take the money and then vote VIP all the way.
“I’ve been among you and I hear you. You are ready to take your government back. Government is not meant to work just for the rich and the well connected. But government is meant to work for the ordinary people, the working class people and the people who need the help the most,” he said.
He said that the time has come to end this incestuous relationship between the members of government and their companies and their associations that get all the fat contracts to the detriment of the ordinary persons.
He said was truly honoured and humbled to be chosen as the candidate for the Sixth District and as the flag bearer for change that he speaks about.
Being inspired by the love and support of his colleagues, he said together they will lead the charge and usher in better days which have been long in coming.
“Tonight is special for me because this is a homecoming of sorts,” he said. “As the song says, who says you can’t go home? There is only one place where I am one of their own and it is this place,” he said.
He said he came not bearing promises but bearing hope. “I come with a message that together we can make this a better place not just for today’s generation but for the next generation to come. We shall stand shoulder to shoulder and move in one direction – forward!” he said.
The former Fifth District representative, who was described by Virgin Islands Party Chairman Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3) as a man of integrity who would bring respect to the House of Assembly, told the audince they must understand that their vote has value and that it has power “and that your vote is not for sale.”
Your vote is priceless & not for sale
“There are things that money can buy and there are things that are priceless,” he said. “So you cannot let them insult you with work for three weeks when you did not work for three long years. You cannot let them insult you with handouts when you have been crying all the time for a hand up that never came,” he said.
Harrigan told them to take the money that the National Democratic Party is handing out but vote them out come Election Day. “It is not their money, it is your money. You have a right to it. Take it,” he said.
“Take your money and then vote them out,” he urged.
A war on poverty
Harrigan said a new VIP government will declare war on poverty in this territory. “I'm running for everything that is good for this community, for upliftment of community and rejuvenation of our collective spirits. People are tired of not being able to make ends meet,” he said.
Proposed water sports park
To this end he is proposing a water sports park in Baughers Bay and presented the drawings for it. “Tonight I am here to announce that we are proposing a major water sports park in this very district in Baugher’s Bay,” he said.
Harrigan explained that he and his team have explored the possibility of such a project and has already had initial discussions with potential investors. He said this project will not only add to the tourism industry but also provide real employment for the people of the district.

A BRIBE is NEVER worth taking, regardless of what you do with the money. Refuse the money and walk away, regardless of whether you are voting for or against that person. However, anyone who had the audacity to attempt to bribe me would never get my vote anyway.
Too many of our ancestors would have willingly died to gain the right to vote. I would never taint their memories or cheapen their struggles by accepting a bribe.
Shame on you (Mr. Harrigan) to suggest such a thing.
I don't mean to be unkind, but I really don't understand the gist of your message. Your screen name would imply that English isn't your first language, so please forgive me if I have misunderstood you to say that you accepted "an envelope" from a candidate running in the 4th district.
You are most certainly entitled to vote for whomever you wish. My point is that accepting a bribe, (regardless of how you vote) is a shameful act. For a "potential political leader" to suggest that people take that money, is even more shameful.
What kind of country is it that would elect leaders who promote and support the taking of bribes? What does it say about the integrity of those who accept them?
Surely we are better than that! We deserve to be respected as intelligent human beings who KNOW the value of our votes. We should stand up and EXPOSE any candidate offering gifts/bribes prior to the election. Perhaps for some accepting a handout is a perfectly normal thing to do. It sure isn't in my family.
Times are tough for many of us and several of our family members are currently having financial difficulties. We will manage somehow. We always do. NEVER would any of us accept an envelop from ANY political candidate representing ANY party, but we would gladly expose anyone who tried! This sort of low level pandering has to STOP! It's an utter disgrace and turns our the democratic process into a joke.
