'Super Cop' likely to be reinstated in October
This was confirmed by our usual authentic sources within the administration of the Royal Virgin Police Force (RVIPF) who said Mr Callwood’s issue was one of many being given priority by new Commissioner of Police Michael 'Mick' Matthews.
According to our sources, Callwood is likely to be having his badge back in hand and on duty before the end of October 2016. What we don’t know at this stage are the conditions of Callwood’s return and to which department he would be assigned. He was previously one of the most respected and feared officers of the RVIPF’s traffic department.
Additionally, it is said that Mr Matthews is seeking to re-instate at least five (5) other police officers who were interdicted under the former controversial Commissioner David Morris.
Former CoP Morris, in February 2014, ignored the considerations of former Magistrate Velon L. John and the petition of many public spirited residents of the Virgin Islands when he slapped Callwood with citation to face possible disciplinary action.
Callwood, who was before the Magistrate’s Court on a charge of alleged indecent assault, was found guilty of the offense on January 29, 2014. The Virtual Complainant (VC) was a Maintenance Supervisor with the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force.
Around the world, even in the United Kingdom research would uncover hundreds of police officers still serving despite having convictions against their names. “That what Morris did was baseless. All he had to do was a simple google search of United Kingdom police officers serving with convictions and he would have seen the kind of things that they have against their names. That what Callwood was struck for did not warrant him being kicked out of the force,” said a source in the RVIPF administration.
Background
On February 6, 2014 Police Officer Glen Callwood had expressed that the Magistrate’s Court issue a fair decision considering all that had transpired with his reprieve. He had expressed that he was prepared to go back to do his work, something that he loved and did with a passion.
Subsequent to the Magistrate’s ‘considerate’ decision, noting that the VI needs more ‘Super Cops’, Morris had indicated that he could not have given any assurance that the officer would have been returned to his substantive post within the RVIPF.
This has gained much attention on a popular talk show ‘Speak your Mind’ which was hosted by Mr Julio ‘Sam’ Henry where many callers pleaded for the reinstating of Callwood as they like Dr Velon John thought that the offence was of such a nature that did not warrant his being deprived of performing the duties of a traffic officer.
Responding to calls made by residents for the reinstating of ‘Super Cop’, Mr Henry had drafted a petition which was signed by residents to be sent to the CoP Morris.
Many saw the action of Morris as inconsiderate and uncalled for. One person very close to the matter had stated that the Police Commissioner had put the cart before the horse as the incident had occurred between two of his officers on duty at the Road Town Police Station location and as such should have been subjected to internal disciplinary procedures as opposed to the Magistrate’s Court first.
Mr Matthews, a UK national, took over the reins of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) at a time when it has been rocked with allegations of corruption and increasing armed robberies in the territory. But he is now getting taps on the shoulders as it is said he is heading in the direction of dealing with his officers in a fair way.
