Stoby storms to victory in race 2 of HLSCC series on VG!
Stoby sprinted unchallenged to the finish line ahead of Pipe (11:59.97) while T.R. Robinson (12:12.22) was third, Emrol Amsterdam (12:26.08) fourth, Jermain Abrams (12:38.57) fifth and Corwin Andrews (12:41.36) sixth.
Kathleen Brownsden won in the women’s division in 12:50.47 and 7th overall. She was followed by Vivian Toro (15:46.72) and Christina Yates (27:08.29). Brownsdon also broke the women’s course record set by Victoria Bezemer (13:43.03, Oct. 10, 2011).
Veteran distance runner Amsterdam suffered a hamstring injury early in the race as he attempted to go hard from the get go but was still able to finish the race.
With Amsterdam having to fall behind early, the breakaway crew included Stoby, Robinson and Pipe with Robinson acting as a pace setter for Pipe. Stoby made his move at the turnaround with Pipe in hot pursuit but the defending champion could not keep up with the pace as Stoby chopped off some 48 seconds off his 2-mile time recorded at the last race at Paraquita Bay on September 21, 2013.
At the end of race #2, O’Neal House of the Bregado Flax Educational Centre is the clear leader in the secondary division followed by Rhymer House; defending champs Harrigan House remain out of sight for this 2013 series. In the primary division defending champions Steven’s Stallions, however, were over taken by Levon’s Leopards with the two teams now tied going into the final race scheduled for October 19, 2013.
Race Director Stephanie Russ Penn expressed that, “while the numbers remain low she is optimistic that the final race will have a great showing. She reminded persons that the annual awards ceremony will be held after the final race on October 19 and she looks forward to the community’s participation.”
The next race in the series on Virgin Gorda is October 19, 2013 while Race 2 on Tortola is slated for October 12, 2013.
