Wheatley has expressed feelings of deep sadness following the passing of Ms. Gertrude Aloma Callwood, a beloved grandmother, mother, aunt, and pioneer businesswoman who made an indelible mark on the Virgin Islands, especially on the island of Jost van Dyke. Ms. Callwood was not only an exceptional entrepreneur but also a pillar of strength and influence within her community who was a stalwart of the tourism industry and a wonderful human being. She will be missed not only by the people of JVD who patronized her businesses, but by all Virgin Islanders and by extension the numerous tourists who visited her renowned restaurant and returned year after year who had the honour and privilege of interacting with her.

Her journey to becoming one of the first businesswomen on Jost van Dyke is a testament to her resilience, vision, and unwavering dedication to her family and her beloved island. Through her hard work and determination, she established Gertrude’s Beach Bar and Grill, a landmark that has become synonymous with White Bay.

Ms. Callwood's impact, however, extends far beyond her business achievements. She was a trailblazer, a mentor, and a voice of wisdom and guidance in the political landscape of District Two.

Her passing is a tremendous loss to the Virgin Islands, but her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.

On behalf of the Government and people of the Virgin Islands, I extend my deepest condolences to her sons, as well as to her extended family, friends, employees, and all those whose lives she touched.

May you find comfort in the enduring impact of her life and the many memories you shared.

As we mourn her loss, let us also celebrate the life of a phenomenal woman who truly embodied the spirit of the Virgin Islands. May Ms. Gertrude Aloma Callwood rest in eternal peace.
