ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The high number of frontline workers, including nurses, not vaccinated is startling. This is according to UK Healthcare Ambassador to the Overseas Territories, Professor Ian Cumming.

While a guest on the Big Story with host Cathy O. Richards last week, Professor Cumming expressed that a very small percentage of nurses in the Virgin Islands opted to get vaccinated.

"We need to do more to encourge nurses here in the Virgin Islands to take up the vaccine. With doctors, I understand it is approaching 100%, of the doctors being fully vaccinated."

However, according to Professor Cumming, "We need to do more with getting our nurses vaccinated."

'Concerned'

On the other hand, "Concerned" is another word Professor Cumming used to describe his personal assessment of the Virgin Islands population's response to taking the AstraZeneca vaccine.

"What I see from people, from the many many people I have spoken to, and yes I have done public meetings, what I have picked up from people is first of all there is a perception that the risk from the virus to the people of these very beautiful islands is very low but, unfortunately, that's not the case."

According to Professor Cumming, there is also the perception that the risk from the vaccine is very high, "And that is also not the case. The vaccine you have here is safe and there is a real risk from the virus."

He cited the case of Gibraltar where they are currently up to approximately 90% vaccinated as result of a sudden upsurge in the virus that resulted in close to 100 persons dying. This was after the country was doing well with a very low number of cases. This changed because of community spread.

'This virus kills people'

"They saw people dying, they saw first hand what this virus can do, and what I want to do is to make sure that the population of the Virgin Islands don't have to have an outbreak, don't have to see more people suffering and dying to convince people to take the vaccine.

"So I think if there is one message I could give to people listening is to use your own slogan, don't procrastinate get vaccinated. This virus kills people."

"It only takes one person coming in and infecting people and we could see a lot of people dying, we don't want that for the Virgin Islands."

He termed as "nonsense" the prevelance of anti-vaccination rants and mystery talks saturating social media and being strongly supported by residents here.

Professor Cumming said he supports the government's position of keeping vaccination voluntary as opposed to mandatory but said, "People should make that decision in full knowledge of all the facts and not having to listen to a few people who are very anti vaccine."

Wow. That is disturbing. And discouraging.
If Covid takes hold here, as tourists keep coming in, we could have an outbreak that the unvaccinated people are not prepared for. Nurses being among that group, it would have a disasterous effect on the Healthcare system. Remember what happened overseas, before vaccination was available.
It’s a crying shame that nurses, who are on the frontline of care, are not also at the forefront of the vaccination efforts here.

A personal choice, true. But a personal choice that will have a monumental effect - positively, or negatively - on the health and well being of entire community and Territory, depending on your choice.

This person is obviously scared, ignorant and obviously not a professional. Healthcare providers are to advise persons giving them the information they need. Your personal preference has no place in your job role. Time will tell. May Almighty God intervene that they may apply knowledge and wisdom

Nah if the nurses and medical professionals speak out you will want to crucify them. It’s a sad disgrace you & others expect doctors to be indoctrinated mindless censored individuals fearful of losing their elite status by voicing educated skepticism at accepting into their body A NOVEL EMERGENCY APPROVED MEDICINE

People please go and do your own research. They were quick to give numbers of how many people die from the virus. They tight lipped on the number of people dying or the side effects of the vaccine. They also forgot to tell you guys you are going to need booster shots. This is one-sided information. DON'T take their word for it do your own research.

That would mean they actually have to read you know that is a sin. They rather have white Dr. FASSY and other fools tell them what to do. Reading? Not most of these negroes.

This should not be surprising, they are health professionals who know best not to take any mislabeled and untested concoction into their bodies. If this was such a good thing, people would not have to be coerced and manipulated to take it. Skip the emotions and read people. This is not a vaccine by definition and simply does not function as such. Now folks that took it are learning that they have to take it every year, such misinformation.

Speak the whole truth white bwoy, not quarter. You are speaking one sided. We out here doing our researches. Bout you supports the government's position of keeping vaccination voluntary as opposed to mandatory. The truth is, no government in the Caribbean can made it mandatory because doing so will be a crime against humanity. and who ever is guilty can face a death penalty under (ICCPR) International Convention Civil Political Rights. Nuff said.

It seem likely that the BVI is destined to follow the same virus death path as Gibraltar. The virus surge and deaths will begin here later this summer from various positive virus visitors(vaccinated or unvaccinated) who will spread this virus into the BVI community. Once the virus is in the unvaccinated community here it will spread fast and untimely deaths will occur more frequently. The virus surge will have little to no effect on the vaccinated BVI community. Eventually a portion of the vaccine hesitant community will figure out that taking the vaccine is a better choice than death.

You talking g share nonsense. The survival rate of getting the so called virus is ninety something percent as opposed to those who take the jab. Who will likely die within 2 to 5 years. The Almighty God has created us in his image. We are designed to fight off any virus once we have not contaminated our bodies. Food is your medicine. Don't be easily fooled. Go do your research and find the truth for yourself. The devils plans are crumbling.

The virus kills. Please look at what is happening close to home, Barbados, Bermuda, St Kitts,Anguilla and the list grows.
Please don’t wait until we have hundreds of cases and people on ventilators to take the vaccine. Even if you personally are at low risk think of others that have an increased risk. Obesity, Diabetes, respiratory disorders all mean a person is much more likely to be seriously ill with the virus. Please take the vaccine, no one is safe until everyone is safe.

We have opened up the country to a rise in cases in the immediate future. People are travelling from places that the Delta strain is on the rise or dominant. This WILL BE IN the BVI in the next two months. There isn't a chance with current protocols that we will miss it. IT WILL HIT the non vaccinated hard. How do I know this? It has done the same EVERYWHERE! Vaccinated people can test up to 5 days before arrival and then no test on arrival. There is no safety net anymore. Wear your mask and GET VACCINATED. We are no longer protected so you must protect yourself. The UK will not be sending more till after they reach their own vaccination goals in July. Currently you have a chance of dying not taking the vaccine than you do from taking it.
