ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Young people in the Virgin Islands will soon have an online space where they can connect with professional counsellors as ‘Speak2Someone’, an online counselling chat service, will be launched on Monday, March 10, 2025, by the BVI’s Youth U-Turn Project (the NPO).

Founded by Dr Adelle E.K. Paul, the NPO has an overall mission of developing and providing access to quality programs, dialogue, music and art that promote the mental and emotional well-being of youth in the Virgin Islands (VI).

The vision of the NPO is ‘Supporting Our Youths to Make a U-Turn for the Better.

“This initiative has been a long time coming. Since 2016, I had been putting a team together in order to launch this facility for 2017…While the project has been on pause since the 2017 storms, the NPO has recently been restored and will be moving ahead with full steam. The constant cries in the community have been overwhelming. I want the young people to know that I hear you, I understand you, and together, you will be able to reach your fullest potential and to make a U-Turn for the better,” Dr Paul said in a press release.

Give it a try- Dr Paul

Dr Paul urged young people to give the Speak2Someone service a try before judging it.

“Do not worry about previous counselling sessions you may have attended in the past that you do not believe was helpful…This facility just might be the avenue that could help you to get through, in a whole new way,” she explained.

Dr Paul also addressed confidentiality concerns, adding that the professional counsellors render their services from outside the BVI.

“We take your concerns about confidentiality and privacy very seriously. This program is for you. It is free,” she assured, “Our counsellors have been fully vetted.”

Access to Speak2Someone is easy- Dr Paul

Those wishing to access the Speak2Someone facility can do so in easy steps by going to https://www.u-turnbvi.com, and then hitting the “Speak2Someone” button.

While the service will not yet be available 24 hours a day, Dr Paul encouraged the community to support the initiative to ensure that a professional is always on hand, at any time of day to listen to the young people providing them with the guidance they need.

In the meantime, Dr Paul said the NPO will publicise the hours of availability of the Speak2Someone counsellors weekly, starting March 10, 2025.

She also said this Speak2Somone service is the first of several initiatives the NPO will roll out this year.

“All initiatives will be geared towards ‘Supporting Our Youths to Make a U-Turn for the Better’, she revealed.

Sounds like a interesting project but the article doesn't give any information on the project leader, Dr Adelle E.K. Paul. Is she a psychologist or a psychiatrist or a mental health counsellor, and where does she work (BVI public health or private practice)?

Why does where she come from play a role in this great initiative. This xenophobic attitude towards persons of different geographical localities has to cease
