BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI- Women who may be worried about taking time off from work to have their mammograms done have been encouraged to get in touch with Breast Friends or the Social Security Department.

The President of Breast Friends, Lisa Adamson, was a guest on Talking Points on Monday, February 17, 2025, when she discussed the work of the Non-Profit Organisation (NPO).

Social Security on board- Lisa Adamson

“As we know, the word breast cancer can be stigmatised and scary,” she said.

Breast Friends, she stated, had a meeting with the Social Security Department, which she described as “fantastic” to discuss what women are entitled to when it comes to breast health and getting time off for mammograms.

Adamson added that women who may be worried about asking their bosses for time off should contact her or the Social Security Department to know of what they are entitled to.

Breast Friends’ Buddy System

Breast Friends also has a buddy system, allowing women who need support to have another woman with them.

Adamson explained that some women have never had a mammogram or are too afraid to have a mammogram and may not know what is involved.

“We have a buddy system that if a woman wants to have a mammogram and is too afraid, you can contact me, and one of us will take the time out to take them wherever she needs to go have that mammogram…just to have that support,” she explained.

Breast cancer survivors and friends of Breast Friends are also willing to become mentors to women who are newly diagnosed.

“So we have that team as well, so you’re not going to be on your own,” Adamson said.

Nonsense Lisa, women take time off to do hair, nails and all sorts of frivolous things they deem important every day. Please stop trying to make employers out to be the bad guys.
