Some 8,000 COVID-19 vaccines expected in VI next week
According to Hon Malone, the VI will receive a first batch of some 8,000 doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca (AZD1222).
"Tentatively, vaccines will begin to be available in the territory after its arrival on February 4, 2021," Hon Malone said.
According to the Health Minister, the Ministry of Health will be working closely with Public Health England, Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), WHO and PAHO to produce a comprehensive programme locally to include local stakeholders to make the vaccine available on a voluntary basis to residents.
“The AstraZeneca vaccine is recommended to be given in two separate doses with an interval of four to twelve weeks between doses. It is approved in persons over 18 years of age and pregnant women are excluded. Studies in these subgroups will continue and approval may be granted in these groups depending on results at a later date.”
No serious safety risks
Hon Malone further assured residents that, based on studies, the AstraZeneca vaccine has no serious safety risks.
While noting that more information as it relates to the rolling out of the vaccine will be divulged soon, Cabinet of the Virgin Islands has approved a steering committee for the implementation of a COVID-19 vaccine in the territory led by the Ministry of Health, the Chief Medical Officer and involving all key stakeholders in the public and private sector and also community groups.
The Government has said it is committed to providing this vaccine without cost to the public through the public health system and also making it available through private providers and will seek to ensure that access through the private sector will be at a reasonable cost.
Members of the public are asked to remain patient and calm as the committees do their work to ensure a safe and efficient roll-out of the vaccine across the territory.
Oxford-AstraZeneca
AZD1222, known as the Oxford–AstraZeneca vaccine among others, is a COVID-19 vaccine developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca given by intramuscular injection, using as a vector the modified chimpanzee adenovirus ChAdOx1.
One dosing regimen showed 90% efficiency when a half-dose was followed by a full-dose after at least one month.
