ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Solar Technology Energy Programme will officially launch in the Virgin Islands in 2025 when the first solar panels are installed, Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has said.

In April 2024, Minister for Communications and Works Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) revealed that the programme is “meant to reduce the electricity bills of participant residential customers by as much as 50%”.

The Solar Technology Energy Programme is the brainchild of Hon Rymer who Premier Wheatley described as “very capable” while addressing the BVI Electricity Corporation Career Expo opening ceremony on November 29, 2024, at the BVIEC Long Bush Compound.

Hon Rymer’s new portfolio

It was announced in November 2024 that His Excellency the Governor Mr Daniel Pruce had signed instruments of appointment, resulting in changes to ministerial portfolios. These changes allowed the Ministry of Communications and Works to be responsible for Alternative Energy.

“I recently transferred responsibility for Alternative Energy to the very capable Hon Kye Rymer, because the BVIEC has a vision to be able to utilise the power of the sun as opposed to just fossil fuels which is fuelling the climate crisis in these Virgin Islands,” Premier Wheatley explained.

New energy source in the new year- Premier Wheatley

“We want to ensure that as many homes as possible in the Virgin Islands have solar panels,” Premier Wheatley stated.

Premier Wheatley added that the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports, the H Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC), along with partner UniteBVI, are also instrumental in the programme. Thirty persons were certified and are now skilled in installing solar panels.

Some 1.35 million dollars has been invested into the programme.

“I’m looking forward to coming back here, when we break ground on so to speak on that new programme, when we launch that new programme and install that first solar [panels]. I’m looking forward to it and I know that it’s coming in the New Year,” the Premier said.

And you all think I am crazy and hit the dislike button but these people can bring the same beast system to you and it doesn't register with you. Solar is nothing but mockery. We are not supposed to be paying for electricity, current comes from water do you all understand. Solar system worldwide is to control how much current you use because robots don't need to pay electricity. The premier stays on point every week with his script. I want to know who's running this Island because the way things are going it like it's run by babies not even kids infants
