Skillful Ballers Sr & Ice Connection 1-1 in VG Summer Jam Championships

- Champions to be decided in Best of 5 series

VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI- Skillful Ballers Sr of Tortola drew first blood when the Best of Five A Division Championship Series in the VG Summer Jam League tipped off at Jeffrey Caines Area in Virgin Gorda on Friday, November 15, 2024, however, home side Ice Connection bounced back to level the series on Saturday, November 16, 2024.

Skillfull Ballers Sr won the first game 88-80, with Franklyn L. Penn Jr netting 21 points and pulling 10 rebounds. Douron R. Phillip dropped in 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while Shakeen Tyson contributed 13 points and 15 rebounds.

Ice Connection’s challenge was led by Khalid S. Gerard Jr and Zion Jones who finished with 21 points each.

Ice Connection rebounds

Returning for game 2 on Saturday, Ice Connection levelled matters by beating their Tortola opponents 77-75.
Zion Jones again stepped up for Ice Connection by putting in a game-high 25 points.

Amadeus Der-weer, with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Leonardo Castillo Jr and Kadeem Jones, with 10 points each, ensured Ice Connection remained in the hunt for the title.

Skillful Ballers, coached by Ronald Simmons aka ‘Gola’, put up a strong challenge but came up agonisingly short.

Shakeem Blackmoore finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Franklyn L. Penn Jr had 16 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists, and Douron R. Phillip finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Controversy

The high-intensity and entertaining matchup was not without controversy.

Midway into the game, the coach of Ice Connection, Steve E. Parillon, discontinued his coaching duties due to what he alleged was “disrespect” from Ice Connection players. The owner of the team, William A. Penn aka ‘Ice Willy’, took over the coaching and was able to lead his side to a narrow victory.

Ice Connection’s title hopes have been boosted this year, with the inclusion of several players from St Thomas and St Croix.
