Skelton & Walwyn's call for HoA protest on ‘Vote of No Confidence’ flops

- They both asked residents to come to HoA on Friday October 18, 2024 to show support
Both Leader of the Opposition Hon Ronnie W. Skelton (AL), right, and Honourable Myron V. Walwyn (R6), left, have failed in their attempts to get the public to show up at the House of Assembly in support for the Vote of No Confidence against the Virgin Islands Party Government led by Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7). Photo: Facebook/File

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- For weeks, leading up to the House of Assembly (HoA) new sitting (Twentieth Sitting of the First Session of the Fifth HoA) held on Friday, October 18, 2024, some members of the tri-party Opposition were calling on the public to show up at the HoA to protest and show support for the Vote of No Confidence.

Both Leader of the Opposition Hon Ronnie W. Skelton (AL) and Honourable Myron V. Walwyn (R6) took the lead in calling for the protest so the public could show support for the Vote of No Confidence against the Virgin Islands Party Government led by Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7).

Public protest called to support vote of no confidence

Hon Walwyn, for example, made the call while speaking on ZBVI Radio Station 780 AM with Zan Lewis last week and both he and Hon Skelton, while speaking at the three-hour-long Opposition press conference held on October 15, 2024, on the Vote of No Confidence, invited the public to attend the HoA meeting on Friday, October 18, 2024.

The Vote of No Confidence was wrongly placed on the Order Paper last month, according to the ruling of Speaker of the HoA Hon Corine N. George-Massicote, but it has since been done correctly and is on the agenda of the Order Paper.

The objective of the protest, according to Hon Walwyn, was to “show contempt for Dr Wheatley’s attempts to pack the Order Paper so that the Vote of No Confidence could be delayed”. Hon Walwyn told ZBVI, "I want everyone to come down to the HoA to protest peacefully" and repeated the protest call about two times at the Opposition Press Conference on October 15, 2024, hosted by former legislator Eileene L. Parsons, OBE in the studio of ZBVI Radio Station.

The Leader of the Opposition also told the local newspaper, The BVI Beacon, that "everyone must come down to the HoA in mass to show public support for the Vote of No Confidence" on Friday, October 18, 2024. “We want the whole country to come down to the HoA on Friday...all those people who are concerned about the economy and everything else that is going on,” Hon Skelton stated.

Big flop; No one showed up to protest

Despite the calls from the two Opposition Members, no one showed up to protest at the HoA. In other words, their call flopped or fell on deaf ears and the Opposition was said to be “very surprised and embarrassed that no one showed up despite the calls.” Virgin Islands News Online visited the HoA on Friday and saw no one there. Our reporter did observe four residents sitting in the gallery (one of the four was a young child) and by afternoon it had dwindled to one person.

Tri-party Opposition embarrassed with no-show of protestors

A local political scientist, speaking to our news centre on condition of anonymity, noted that “This was a serious message to the Opposition, [that] while the current Government is very unpopular the opposition is not the alternative....they could not even get out at least 10 persons to protest, it says a lot about the influence of the Opposition, especially its Leader and Mr Walwyn”. She noted that while the Vote of No Confidence has some important and topical issues, some residents were turned off by the press conference and that it was clear they were not all on the same page, with Hon Fraser throwing cold water on the night every time he spoke...”

The Political Scientist; however, noted that the Opposition is within its rights to call for a Vote of No Confidence, as it’s a tool used in the Westminster system forms of democratic governance.

While the Vote of No Confidence is on the Order Paper, it remains unclear when it will be debated. The HoA will continue its Twentieth Sitting of the First Session of the Fifth HoA on Friday, October 25, 2024.

The opposition continues to fight a losing battle. Their bark is bigger than their bite. In every faucet of life the majority carries and these guys need to let this principle resonate with them. The way I see it is if they continue to keep the public informed with what is going on then at the right time that motion of no confidence will be delivered without any kind of protest.

If I recall the people of this country give this group an opportunity to lead the country but instead the chose to argue over who should be the boss. I thought before election Hon. Frazer and Hon. Skelton had an agreement, what happened to that? Now they’re here with a Vote of No Confidence and still can’t get it together. If you all can’t agree on who should be the leader, how the hell uo expect is the citizens to support this. Come on I expect better from these two seasoned politicians. Put your efforts to something more beneficial than this vote especially since you all can’t agree on the leadership. Stop wasting time. On another note argue about that show coming here next year, now that’s something we all can agree on.

Many are of the opinion that VI opposition leadership is an oxymoron. In fact many also believe BVI leadership is an oxymoron. Dr. Hon Premier Natalio Wheatley, let the people’s representatives go . Let the Vote of No Confidence go , for it’s the Opposition right to call for a vote of no confidence whether you think the time is right or not. It is their right under the constitution. Delaying just make you look as a hindrance to their right. Are you fraid it may succeed?

The Opposition isn't well organised and all of these men would like to be Premier. The populace can peacefully protest to support them in the vote of no confidence with one caveat we get to choose who the Premier wili be. Now, this is something for them to think about. Its about time the people of these beautiful Virgin Islands get to make THAT choice.
I know most of us would like the current Premier to vacate his position because clearly he hasn't demonstrated the leadership skills this Country requires. I strongly wanted him to succeed, however i regretfully doubt he has the mental capacity to steer this Country where it should be. This isn't the Showande i know. Clearly, something or someone is pulling the strings in the background because some type of force has taken over because all i can see is a whole lot of bufoonery coming from our Premier. Its like watching a clown at a circus replace the once intelligent, strong and focused young man. I call on all persons in these Virgin Islands to pray for our Premier and his family. Pray for God's guidance, mercies and protection on his life and on the decisions he's making and that he will soon find a way to improve his leadership skills. May God continue to bless these Virgin Islands and all who call it their home.

It is correct to say that the opposition gave the tone of a love affair with Wheatley, especially dangerous Frazer, it was not the place and time to point out traits in the VIP that you like, Frazer mash up the momentum that was built. Everyone made it sound like a friendly chat except walwyn who was on target, Ronnie don't Have the zeal in him, he too laid back, it's like because he is a wealthy persons he think he can mutter something in his throat as if he is at his company desk and his employees tremble, that's not the case here in the people's parliament, he got to shout and make noise to inspire public confidence , Ronnie sound too lethargic, Mather need to rev it up, and penn thinks he has the public ears so he try to come across too diplomatic when he should be kicking a$$, it's sounded as though it was a friendly opposition press conference, Frazer is not to be trusted, do you see how Frazer part his hair in the center? A relic of colonial days when the slave had to emulate his masters blond hair been parted, Frazer is a coconut, brown outside and white inside, he will sell out anytime to enjoy the trappings of colonial formalities in office, and not concern about his country or people. The opposition has to stop being this lazy and come together and picket and even block the premiere vehicle to his office, that will get international press, and draw attention from the public.
