Skelton-Cline wants laws for private citizens to bear arms

- said there is an imbalance where only the criminals are armed
‘Honestly Speaking’ Talkshow host Claude O. Skelton-Cline has called for robust law reforms in the Virgin Islands, that will give private citizens the right to carry a gun as a means to protect themselves against crime and criminal elements in the territory. Photo: VINO/File

Calling for more law reforms, Skelton-Cline tasked VI legislators in the House of Assembly (HoA) to deal with the issue, 'if the current laws that we have on our books is not suited for the 21st century and the challenges that we face,' he said the laws would need to be reformed. Photo: GIS/File.

BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI – ‘Honestly Speaking’ talk show host Mr Claude O. Skelton-Cline has called for robust law reforms to give private citizens in the Virgin Islands (VI) the right to carry a gun as a means to protect themselves against criminal elements in the territory.

The calls were made moments ago during a special Wednesday, April 21, 2021, edition of his Honestly Speaking show on ZBVI 780 AM and come on the heels of a woman being fatally shot during a robbery at her residence in Paraquita Bay on April 18, 2021.

‘Only the criminal got the guns’ – Skelton Cline

"It’s a situation where only the criminals got the guns, but law-abiding citizens who need to protect their family, some of whom have businesses are being denied the capacity, the ability to carry a licensed firearm,” the man of the cloth said.

Skelton-Cline, a business owner and local clergyman, also questioned why criminals are allowed to have guns in the VI but business owners cannot have guns.

He further called on the National Security Council to address the issue and make moves to bring crime under control.

“How is it that we allow in a country for just the criminals to have guns and there are no real means by which people can protect themselves?” he asked.

“You mean to tell me somebody come into your business, into your home, you have no means… and if you have a firearm of any sort and you seek to defend yourself and then go to the Magistrate or the Judge, then the Judge is prosecuting you for having an unlicensed firearm?” Skelton-Cline asked rhetorically.

Legislators tasked to reform laws against crime

Calling for more criminal law reforms, he tasked legislators in the House of Assembly (HoA) to deal with the issue, “if the current laws that we have on our books are not suited for the 21st century and the challenges that we face,” he said the laws would need to be reformed.

“We cannot remain as sitting sucks in the country where the innocent continues to suffer and in so many instances lose their lives. It's unacceptable,” the man of the cloth said.

Refer to Part 2 below (There are businessmen who have license firearms and a permit to carry):

      16A. Prohibited Firearms or Ammunition

      (1) Subject to this Act, a person shall not use, purchase, acquire or have in his or her possession, import or export, carry, manufacture, supply or offer to supply to another, be concerned in the supplying to another, of any of the weapons specified in the Third Schedule.1

These police can not even get these scooter kids under control.....do we really expect them to solve murders and control guns ?

Yes I think we only need to look at the US which has absolutely no crime or shootings as a result of allowing citizens to own guns...
More guns means easier for people to get shot in moments of temper and the criminals will be more likely to carry guns if they think their potential victims have them. Also I must have missed the part in the BVI laws that says criminals are allowed to carry guns. Claude is really outdoing himself with this crackpot idea
  • Idiot (21/04/2021, 20:01) Like (47) Dislike (3) Reply
During 2021 the BVI has suffered 4 murders and the USVI 18 murders. The murder rate (per 10,000 population) in the USVI is more than 50% higher than the BVI. If you want more murders then allow people to carry firearms.

I think he is disgraceful, not because someone wakes up in the morning and desires to be on a pulpit means that Jesus called them to that service. They serve themselves, and their own dark appetite! Many will be surprised at the worth of their dark lives. The church system feeds the bellies of these dark wolves, and this is why the system must fall and be rebuilt in the fashion Jesus intended it to be. My advice to them...repent before the judgement of God falls on them!

Like you said the criminals have guns and the law-abiding citizens who need to protect their families, some of whom have businesses are being denied the capacity, the ability to carry a licensed firearm we have got to start fighting fire with fire. We need to do something. The Premier bodyguards carry guns what happens to the rest of the citizens who are at risk.

No. Not more guns that will change our whole atmosphere and create antisocial fear to kill the community spirit.

We need education. People don’t know their rights and we have a mentally that inflicting harm upon a robber is seen as probably putting YOU in jail.

People don’t know what they can or can’t do to safe guard themselves nor is any official advocating sensible methods of self defense all they will say is leave it to the police continue being helpless

This is not natural for human beings to be defenseless.

The contradiction is the idea of a gun as a first & last step fix all is a infantile nuclear solution which shows our disconnection with the idea of security and sensible solutions.

Fact is the police come afterwards they can’t protect you in the moment.

If an intruder enters a home you have to be proactive not reactive and at their mercy on your property.

We are not ready for guns we don’t even have the mindset to encourage or scale up self defense that will deter incapacitate and may kill but probably won’t, unlike a gun.

Let the experts fill us in on solutions. We can get rid of the guns if police get serious on how and who brings them in.

People can’t drive properly and we want them to have guns. Registered guns kill innocent people too. we can’t handle a mass shooting seriously.

Is hard not to attack his character as a pastor he makes me wonder what that word means.

ALLOW BOTH BUSINESS AND PRIVATE TO BEAR ARMS, BECAUSE PRIVATE CITIZENS ARE JUST AS VULNERABLE AS BUSINESS CITIZENS. EACH PERSON HAS A RIGHT TO SELF DEFENCE. HOW ELSE COULD IT BE CALLED SELF DEFENCE IF WHEN A MATTER AND DEATH SITUATION ARISE YOU HAVE NO DEFENCE, BUT THE CRIMINALS DO? GIVE TO PRIVATE CITIZENS THE RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS, BUT MAKE THEM FULLY RESPONSIBLE FOR HOW THEY USE THEIR ARMS. IN A SITUATION WHEN A POLICE IS NOT PRESENT TO HELP A POTENTIAL VICTIM SHOULD NOT THE POTENTIAL VICTIM BE ALLOWED TO DEFEND SELF AND FAMILY? SHOULD NOT A CRIMINAL KNOW THAT HIS OR HER LIFE IS ALSO AT RISK? WHY DO COWS HAVE HORNS? WHY DO TORNY TREES HAVE TORNS ETC. SELF DEFENCE IS A GOD GIVEN TO MAN AND MOST CREATURES.
GOD IS NOT AGAINST ARMS. HE IS AGAINST SIN.
ON THIS ONE CSC IS RIGHT. LIFE IS PRECIOUS TO ALL. CRIMINAL NEED TO ACCEPT THIS TRUTH ONE WAY OR THE OTHER.

No this is not the route to go, introducing guns into the community has no positive effect, everything changes even the way we are policed. Let's not get narrow minded but continue to see the bigger picture. We cannot even police scooters how are we going to police guns. Legalizing guns would turn out exactly like the scooters and within a year everyone will be calling everyweek to ban guns again.

@Lucifer, You wake up to the sound of someone breaking into your house almost 100% 0f the criminals have guns, what are you going to do to protect you and your family? Call the police well that's a joke because if they do come by the time they get there you and your family could be history. If criminals knew that businesses and homeowners had guns they will think before they try to rob you. Not everyone should have a gun there are ways to control the guns from getting in the criminal's hands legally, No gun shops in the BVI you must have a license in order to purchase a firearm once your order gets in the BVI it Must be registered. Most of these criminals behave the way they do because they know that there is no stopping them if they have a gun and you don't. The first time it happens to you or your family you will think differently. When I lived in the USA I had a licensed firearm it never left my home. I don't believe we should have a license to carry it but I do believe we should be able to have a licensed firearm to protect ourselves and our families.

You have sort of answered your own point. If there are ways to control guns from getting into criminal hands then what is the need for everyone to have guns for? Criminals will be more heavily tooled up if they think you have guns and more likely to shoot first before robbing you anyways. Private guns here would turn the place into little Jamaica with wannabe gangsters trying to show had bad they are

How is a 120lb woman supposed to defend herself and children against an attack? Call the police? When seconds count the police are only minutes away.....at best. Those who have never suffered a violent assault, and worse, in the sanctity of their own home have no idea what they bloviate over. By God's mercy I pray you or your children never have to live through that to understand what self protection means for a woman. A pox on you cowards who would prefer the vulnerable be disarmed, you have no right!

there is more available in 2021 than a gun to protect yourself and if you are so concerned your home should have dogs and an alarm system.

People say self defense and first they jump to is a gun but you won’t educate yourself otherwise.

100% You should have an alarm and dogs, however those are only warning systems, nothing more, to think otherwise is providing yourself with a false sense of security. And don't assume you will be up against a single assailant, cowards work in teams/groups, they're not there to give you the advantage, they're there to take it from you. As a woman relying on alarms/dogs/pepper spray/martial arts is foolish, anyone experienced in real world violence will agree, awareness of your surroundings and proper training with a firearm are your only chance at surviving a real attack. Stop thinking ideologically, the imaginary world is biased to you surviving, reality is a brick in the face when you least expect it. If you're not prepared for that you'll be in for the shock of your life when you least expect it.
