The National Parks Trust, a statutory body under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year of conservation in the Virgin Islands.
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Word just reaching Virgin Islands News Online from its team of reporters and well placed sources within the ruling National Democratic Party Administration of Premier Dr. D. Orlando Smith, is that retired Permanent Secretary (PS) Sheila N. Brathwaite was approved by Cabinet recently to Chair the National Parks Trust (NPT) Board.

The Cabinet paper advanced a few weeks ago by Deputy Premier and Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Dr. Kedrick Pickering, strongly supported Mrs. Brathwaite, a former PS in the same Ministry to chair the NPT board, replacing Hon. Ingrid Moses-Scatliffe, who is now the Speaking of the House of Assembly.

The names of the other members of the 11-member board were not obtained as of press time.

The National Parks Trust

The National Parks Trust (NPT) was established in 1961 as a statutory body under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour and is responsible for parks and protected areas in the Virgin Islands (VI).

Over the years, the NPT has developed from a voluntary organization to a fully-staffed operation, overseen by a Board of Directors and managed by a Director who reports directly to the Chairperson of the Board and they have a staff of over 30 persons.

There are 21 National Parks, which encompass a stunning array of land and marine areas including historic sites, tropical forests, bird sanctuaries and one of the world's most famous shipwrecks, each a jewel in its own right. Whether accessed by boat, car or taxi, the Virgin Island National Park sites remain a major tourist attraction.

According to the NPT website, from the inception of the Trust in 1961, reforestation has been one of its major goals with the replanting of trees at Sage Mountain on Tortola and Gorda Peak on Virgin Gorda, both Parks are sites. The annual Arbour Day celebrations have resulted in the planting of hundreds of mahogany and cedar trees throughout the territory.

The Trust is also deeply involved in maintaining the Territory’s biodiversity and has led several projects to restore or rehabilitate the Territory’s indigenous species.

Mrs. Brathwaite is no stranger to government, before her retirement in 2010, she served as PS in three agencies, the Deputy Governor’s Office, the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour - the ministry under which the NPT, a statutory body, falls.

Now a renowned author of two religious books, a businesswoman, as well as, an indigenous Virgin Islander, Mrs. Brathwaite holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry and a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA).

She is the daughter of late legislator and former Government Minister, Deputy Chief Minister and representative of the 4th district, Alban U. Anthony.

I hope they will do something about Sage Mountain....Thats a National Disgrace if there ever was one. I thought National Parks were protected areas. How did the Government allow so muce private development to that area is beyond me. The only view enjoyed there is of the sides of Mansions and Bush. Please do somethng about that Mrs Brathwaite.

before i vet let me say congratulations to Mrs. Brathwaite as I know she will do a splendid job. But I am one who beleives the NPT needs a big shake up as they move to slow. Trust me when i tell you all the BVI has been losing eco-systems all over because the NPT is too slow to protect!

I fully agree with you Critic. Thats why Music Fest had to be downgraded. Ingrid allowed a miniversion Music Fest with an inflated cost to proceed. If she had any proper managerial skills, she would not have allowed the NPT function to be another glorified Music Fest with no recoup or value to proceed. This may be the only time, I agree with you. I hope she does a better job managing the HOA.

Why do we assume that some has to support a party that is in office in order to serve their country. She is a Virgin Islanders with a right to her political views and a responsibility to serve if and when she can. Shelia you ignore the ignorance.

Too many of our historical sites are in need of dire preservation. When last we designate a historic site as a national park?

Sheila, many congratulations on your appointment, but you have a hard job ahead of you. A few things you may want to put into your "in tray": - NPT owns Prickly Pear, but hasn't received a dime in rent for nearly 20 years from the tenant. About time someone sorted out that situation. - The old QE2 park had a fence built around it about 15 years ago, but nothing since. Is anything ever going to happen, or will that be a wasteland forever? - So many historical ruins in the BVI are falling apart due to neglect, like the Dungeon and the African Church. If the NPT doesn't step up and try to save them before they are gone, who will? - In BVI it is still legal to hunt turtles, even though they are critically endangered internationally. Will NPT take a lead in trying to get the law changed in BVI? I wish you the best of luck, and every success with the challenges ahead.
