BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI- The host of Honestly Speaking, Pastor Claude O. Skelton-Cline, has embarked on a campaign for the Virgin Islands (VI) to make ‘shegeddy’ the national curse word.

During the June 2, 2026, airing of his show on ZBVI 780 AM titled ‘What we know is not true’, he said, “I told you a couple [of] weeks ago I’m looking for sheggedy to become the national curse word of the Virgin Islands.”

He described sheggedy as a way to curse without going to hell. “You don’t have to use all them big expletive [words]. I’m trying to give you a sanitised word we all can use- Christians, non-Christians, Jews, Muslims.”

The clergyman was at the time listing some of the issues affecting the Virgin Islands when he pivoted to talk about what should be the "National cuss word".

Icononise sheggedy

Skelton-Cline added, “As a matter of fact, where is Kareem Hull? Tell Kareem Hull I’m looking for him. I want him to icononise sheggedy…and I want to empower everybody to substitute all them other curse words for sheggedy. Practice using it in a sentence. ‘What the sheggedy is going on?’”

He admitted that he does not know the origin of the word, having heard one of his sisters use it for the first time.

The BVI Tourist Board, he continued, should also get on board, adding, “Right up there with our national dish, our national curse word is sheggedy. Cause a lot of sheggedy going on

The pastor added that users of sheggedy won’t go to hell. “I done passed it by St Peter,” he said through chuckles.

What kind of person, supposedly a man of the cloth, would encourage people to use a curse word, no matter how you pronounce it? Instead of encouraging Angelic words to communicate with GOD's Angels, he is telling us to use the devil's curse words. The mind is a terrible thing to waste!

I use that term since college days at University Texas @EP. Spelt it Shiggidy. So yeah a lot of Shiggidy is going on and wrong but God is always good. Don't know about a national curse word but it's Shiggidy.

You are getting closer to the edge.

I have been using that word forever, now you have made it a curse word. I will have to delete it from my vocabulary.

You are sounding more and more unstable.

What the hell is Sheggedy or shiggidy? Dis wah eh boil down to? Why we trying to sanitize real problems with make believe, fake nonsense? We need to be bold, get the courage, address the BVI’s myriad of social, economic, cultural, political, etc, problems head on with substantial, realistic planning, etc? Stop the damn “ shiggidy “ or “sheggedy” and let’s get to work. No diss to Kareem-Nelson Hull ‘ “ The Virgin Islands Dictionary: A collection of Words and Phraes So you could say it Like We.” It is a good book. But what the VI needs more urgently and importantly is more is more effective short- , medium- and long -term strategic planning. This planning should include affordable, accessible, available, etc, healthcare; investing adequately in education and training to meet its labour needs, strengthening and deepening and diversifying, etc, the economy, deciding on workable and functional self- determination, leveraging technology, designing, constructing, etc, a First World infrastructure net work, viz, roads, water, wastewater, drainage, telecommunications, energy, etc. Here is the dea. We need to stop the dreaming, pretending, hoping, etc and starting behaving proactively.

Why would a so-called Pastor encourage new curse words, as though that is teaching people a way to enter heaven without using known curse words? There is no room for curse words in heaven, so please STOP IT!
