ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) is reminding all drivers and front-seat passengers to wear their seat belts at all times while the vehicle is in motion.

The Road Traffic (Seatbelt & Cellular) Regulations 2004 requires that both drivers and passengers wear seat belts to reduce the risk of serious injury or death in the event of an accident.

Drivers found in violation of this law are liable to a fine of $100 for driving without a seat belt, and if a front-seat passenger is unbelted, the driver will be fined an additional $100, and the passenger will be fined $100.

'Please buckle up'- ACoP Vanterpool

Acting Commissioner of Police Jacqueline E. Vanterpool, in a press release on April 9, 2025, stated: “We have noticed an increasing number of motorists and front-seat passengers failing to buckle up, which puts lives at unnecessary risk. It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure that all passengers in the front seat wear their seat belts, as safety should always come first.”

Ms Vanterpool further stressed the importance of setting a positive example. “Adults who neglect to wear seat belts send the wrong message to younger passengers. If we want to build a culture of road safety, it starts with something as simple as buckling up.”

The RVIPF urges all motorists to make seat belt use a habit before starting their journey, no matter how short the trip.

“Accidents can happen at any time, even just a few yards from your home. Seat belts save lives, please buckle up,” Acting Commissioner Vanterpool added.

Even though I don't like seat belts because they hurt my neck and I have to keep pulling it down, I wear them anyway. The law is the law, and it might save my life one day.

I am seeing the local commissioner creating a culture of favourism, bad talking backing and news carrying...Good worl and Merit promotion will be ignored because of the culture of news carrying, jealousy and bad mouthing will be encouraced and entertained, hence the reason why a new9utsider as commissioner is prefered..One from another OT Island for a better force..

I strongly agree because they wan be picking on ppl for simple illegal things on us when half of them is not setting a good example for us citizens of the British Virgin Islands. How often does the R.V.I.P.F does insure and change their stickers for every year? And how often do they even keep the government vehicles well maintained and in good condition? Despite the fact they want us to wear seatbelts on us all day and night when they know for a fact that them ain't doing anything better for the community. Tbh if we have to follow the law and obey the rules and regulations; then so does the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force too as well. I'm not saying that their lazy but at least show us people of the Virgin Islands a good example so we know what to do before leaving our homes and going out on the roadways.

IF you work in government, you all know how long it takes for DMV to sort out all government cars and slow the government moves in getting simple things done. So, the police themself ain have control over their police vehicles being licensed and insured that government sorting out the paper work. same as Fire same as customs same as any other government dept

I agree with the COP (Ag). A seat belt saved my life over 20 years ago. The vehicle was written off. That accident happened next to a deep body of water and was caused by a drunk driver. I, not knowing how to swim was able to crawl from that vehicle through what was left of the front passenger window. Thank God for his mercy endureth forever. The Officers who happened to be patrolling in the area was on scene in less than 5 minutes and was flabbergasted to find me alive, outside of the vehicle. They were under the impression the jaws of life would be required. The Ambulance showed up om scene in about 10 minutes and Fire was told their services were no longer required. It was the grace of God that saved me and the fact that i had the common sense to utilise a seat belt. God was in the midst of that Storm because i escaped death with only a strained neck, chest pain from the initial impact and bruising from where the seatbelt layed across my shoulder, chest and arm. I wasn't just lucky. It wasn't my time. I was wearing a seatbelt. The vehicle was within the speed limit and Jehovah had covered me that day, though the enemy had other plans. I thank my Father, God for always being on time and showing me grace and being merciful in this and many other situation. I am yet to take to the wheel of a vehicle, though. Sometimes, fear can hinder us from going forward. People, please be mindful and BUCKLE UP because the life you save might not only be your own but that of another. Every person in your vehicle should be restraint by wearing a seatbelt and each child under 7 should be placed in a Car seat and buckled in. Children between the ages of 7 to 10 should be placed on a boosterseat and buckled in. Teach your children road and vehicle safety measures. No heads or hands out of a moving vehicle. No throwing of garbage out of a vehicle and remember to tether your garbage securely to your vehicle when taking it to the Refuse. Rules are meant to be followed. Lets start doing our bit to keep each other safe and our Territory clean. God bless y'all!

Leave that concern for the younger police man. Focus on the review recommendations highlighted for the police in the recent release.
