Scrub Island Resort teams with Willock to bring amputee easy wheelchair access
Following the surgery, Mr Fonseca, a former employee with the BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA), developed difficulties getting to his home on Main Street in the capital city also known as the Fonseca Corner or the Block.
The difficulties arose because getting from his SUV to his home was a dirt track and it was challenging for his wheelchair. It was even more difficult when it rained.
He reached out for help from some of his friends, including former and current politicians and they were also prepared to help. However, one day he called one of his longtime friends, Mr Julain Willock, the former Speaker of the House of Assembly.
Scrub Island a good corporate company
Mr Willock offered to ask one of the many private sector businesses he has contact with to help. He then reached out to Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina and spoke to its General Manager Mrs Sandra L. Grisham. It was also followed up by a site visit.
Ms Grisham via her organisation agreed to build the ramp to ensure that Mr Fonseca had easy access to his home and his automobile.
Scrub Island Resort agreed to fund the entire project and engaged Usker Brown to do the work. The labour and material cost less than five thousand dollars.
General Manager of Scrub Island Ms Grisham noted how delighted she was to do the project and bring joy to someone at Christmas.
Mr Fonseca expressed his gratitude to both Scrub Island Resort and Mr Willock for making this project happen and noted that he can now get in and out of his home without any help following the paving of the ramp.
District Four Representative thankful
Mr Willock noted that the Fourth District Representative Hon Luce D. Hodge-Smith was also kept informed about the project at every step and she also thanked Scrub Island for helping a resident in her constituency.
Mr Fonseca is now trying to raise funds to obtain a prosthetic leg and is currently awaiting approval from the National Health Insurance Scheme.
Many residents also have showered praises on Scrub Island Resort for their continued support of the Virgin Islands Community in many ways as Ms Grisham noted that Scrub Island Resort "continues to contribute to the community in many quiet ways without doing it for publicity.’’
